A little while later...
The problem with rough running with a low fuel level hasn't reoccurred.
We did have a small diesel leak though. Trying to trace it was tricky, and I ended up dropping the tank. Still nothing obvious, but took the opportunity to check everything over and cleaned the outside of the tank off to make tracing future leaks easier...
The tank isn't the original one, and has also had a repair attempted on it - the connection for the surge line back up to the top of the filler pipe looks like someone's thrown solder at it, then given up and put some kind of sealant all over it. I imagine this could be where our leak is coming from... I also replaced all the steel fuel lines on top of the tank with rubber as they were looking tired too. Vacuum tested the fuel pickup pipe and that's fine (it looks in good nick too). The inside of the tank looked in good condition from what I could see, and flushing it out didn't result in much *beep*.
There was a slight dent in the bottom of the tank where the pickup is. Only ~5mm depression, but across that whole area. This has now been 'corrected'...
Put the tank back on, and stuck 1/4 tank diesel in. No patches on the driveway yet (it's only been a few days though) but the top of the tank (viewed through the inspection panel under the middle row seats) is already wet with diesel. It shouldn't have reached any of the connections up there in much quantity, although our access track is rough and will be splashed around a lot. I should drop the tank again, plug all the ports and pressure test with soapy water, although I'm not sure I fancy trying to weld it. Might be more sensible just to source a replacement.
Thanks for your previous assistance |

Sorry, forgot to update this.
Took the tank off again. The connection for the large of the return pipes had at some point been bent or pulled at some point in the past, and someone had attempted a repair by soldering, which hadn't worked, and then covering it is some kind of black sealant. This had failed, hence our leak.
I cleaned off the sealant and solder, and tig welded the connection back to the tank, pressure tested, and refitted the tank. No leaks since!
I think the bottom of the tank is still slightly dented, but it seems 'too flat' to bend back out. I suspect our level gauge sensor is slightly off too - a full tank doesn't indicate full, and the low level light comes on quite late. This should be easy to tweak next time I open that access hatch. |
