Some time ago I had a problem my 2000 DiD 3.2 knocking out too much power, I did nothing about it and now the 1 year old battery is knackered.

It was producing:-
15.25 volts no load
15 vols with a/c and lights on

I've just put a new battery and alternator on and now it's knocking out
15.05 volts no load
14.95 volts with a/c and lights on

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Ted, voltage regulator in the alternator.

It should max out at 14.4 - 14.4 volts on full load.

Hi Assasin good to hear from you,

Strange, the printout in the alternator box says voltage regulator set point 14.33 volts.

I'm measuring between the battery terminals is this correct or should I be taking the reading off the alternator some where?

Many thanks

Interesting, I was trying to get to the bottom of this high voltage thing last night. On advice I put a meter between the battery positive and the sender wire and got no voltage. Also with engine running it makes no difference to the battery reading (14.9v) if the two wire plug is inserted into the back of the alternator or not! Also when not inserted I don't get any warning light on the dash?
I'm thinking there must be a break in the loom somewhere.

Tonight I'm gonna run a wire from positive battery terminal into where the sender terminal plugs into the of the Alternator and see if that tricks the alternator into producing less juice.

Cheers

Well that seems to have worked, now running at 14.28 volts, just need to fit a relay to stop it running the battery down. Happy days.
