Hi
I need some advise I have a pajero mk4 year 2008 ( without DPF)and i noticed in these last few months that when the engineis is between 2500 rpm - 3000rpm it start knocking and a slight white smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipe but  if i increase and keep the rpm over the 3000 a slight black smoke comes out and then over 3000rpm it works fine.

One of my neighbours told me that it might be an injector and one of my friends told me that it can be the timing chain.

Did any one had this issue and what can be the cause of this?

Difficult to diagnose due to little information but it is possibly an injector leak which would be the seals under the injector wearing or split and at lower revs it loses a little compression and gives white smoke, at higher engine revs the loss of compression means it is injecting surplus fuel for the compression of that cylinder and this causes the black smoke.

Simple test, run the engine until warm and access the injectors and clean around their base, mix a little washing up liguid 50:50 with water and paint it heavily around the base of each injector in turn and rev the engine slowly to the engines problem rev range and see if it bubbles up, if so it is the injector seals leaking, do each injector in turn as it will dry quickly and if nothing bubbles you can eliminate it as a cause.

The injectors are under the camshaft cover so you cannot do that check.
