Isnt much really that can cause an alternator to fail that often, was the previous units new or second hand?

There isn't much that cause a repeated failure of the alternator, but here's some help.

There is a 12-14 volt feed from the battery to the alternator, thin wires.

There is a heavier cable from the alternator to the battery, carrying the charge amps.

One thing will damage the alternator, a dead short of this heavy cable to earth, though there is a fuse in this circuit.

Another, don't disconnect the alternator with the engine running.

Welding on the truck. Incorrectly jump starting.

The best guidance will be seen with what's happened to those previous 4 alternators.
What exactly failed ? Was it the same fault on every one ? Was it a winding failure ? Or the rectifier ? Were the alternators replaced under warranty ?

Hi tom, so what happened with the previous 4 failures ? Sound like next time could be more serious than a bolt.

Hi this Is the message I had what what wrong with the last alternator (hi tom ,alternator received back this morning ..upon bench testing theunit wasfound not to be charging, our electrician stripped down the unit to its component parts and there was an obvious reason for failure immediately noticed ..the rectifier has been subjected to extreme operating temperature which has caused it to overload and fail, generally this is only caused by extreme overworking/overload ofthe unit often associated with a veryflat batteryor a faulty battery..please do eliminate a batteryfault and/or fully charge the batteryusing a battery charger prior to fitting another alternator,we are dispatching a tested replacement todayfor delivery to you on friday..if you need any advice regarding the charging circuit/batteriesetc prior to fitting your replacement pleasejust contact us..regards frank)
But I had a new battery fitted the same day as the alternator and the snapped bolt has happened before the alternator seems to be on the piss and putting strain on the tentioner I have looked at several other pajeros and they all apear the same :-\ cheers Tom

only problems I have EVER had with alternator is not charging,

PostPosted: Wed Jan 15, 2020 18:41    Post subject: Shogun Sport Alternator Belt Change Reply with quote

Hello all, sorry if I am repeating a question but I tried searching but could not find an answer to my question.

My alternator has recently been changed and the belts are extremely loose in comparison to all the other belts and I have the tensioner at the maximum and they are still really loose. I have to run the car for around 5 to 10 minutes till the car actually hits charging voltage but anytime any electrics are used the voltage drops and the belts start squeaking really bad.

The belts that are currently on are Gates 6223MC which are 10 x 1075mm.

I have bought Gates 6267MC which are 10 x 998mm which I hope to replace the other ones with, in the hope that the smaller length will tighten things up.

I am unsure how to actually fit the belts though and was wondering if anyone had any idea what other belts need removed before I have access to the alternator belts. Or if anyone has any other ideas anything would help as I am basically unable to use the car at the moment.

Many Thanks
