Hi guys, I need help. I've got a 2002 3.5gdi with a overheating problem. The gauge goes up to approximately the "11 o'clock " not quite into the red but it doesn't boil over. I've carried out the following tests. Compression test, radiator pressure test, chemical gasket test flushed the engine and radiator out replaced thermostat and checked water pump. Changed the viscose fan to electric. But it still indicates over heating. No dash lights come on have done a temperature test on radiator with a ir thermometer and the top of the radiator is around 84c and the bottom around 75c. But yesterday it it was driven with the rad cap off and lost so much coolant the engine died and wouldn't restart until the engine had cooled down now it starts and seems to be fine other than the over heating. As anyone got any ideas about further testing I can carry out.

Sounds like your sender unit is goosed, it's on top of the engine, get a new one. They don't last forever.
I used to have a Frontera that was always overheating, I changed the two senders (it has one for fan and one for gauge) and it never overheated again.
Out of interest, how did you convert to electric fan as I'm thinking of doing the same. |
