We spent 10 months in Australia last year, taking our vehicle with us and shipping it home again at the end of the trip. We were in Australia 281 nights / 282 days, drove 44,164 Km in 260 days in our own vehicle, and 46,431 Km overall in Australia.
The blog is at www.discoverthedreaming.blogspot.com (posts in both English and Spanish) for anyone interested.
I've tried to add a photo or two, however so far have found myself incompetent... will try once the text is posted. |

Great map, you missed Cape York, maybe it was the wet season?
Did you sleep in a tent?
Sorry, I haven't had time to read your blog yet. |

Hi: Cape York was in our base case plan, which was (in a nutshell) to start in Brisbane, explore NSW, SA, WA, NT, Queensland, then head to Victoria and Tasmania when it was warmer, then return to Brisbane to ship the car home. This was driven largely by the climate. When we reached Northern Queensland we weighed up whether to take the time to go to Cape York, which would have meant less time in Victoria and Tasmania. We talked to people who were familiar with the route and checked online and in guidebooks, and concluded that it would take around 15 days to get from Laura to Cape York and back, with a lot of heavily corrugated roads, and a lot less to enjoy compared with spending the same time in the south. No doubt it would have been possible to have "done" Cape York in only 10 days, however this would have been thrashing the vehicle and seeing relatively little - just a "tick the box" exercise, which is not how we like to travel. So, we chose to visit key places in this part of Northern Queensland - Daintree, Laura, Atherton Tableland, etc., and then headed south to maximise time in Victoria and Tasmania.
We slept in the car, which had been prepared for the trip with a bed - the frame was adjustable, and could be lifted at the front for access to storage behind the front seats (actually more to provide better access - normal access was from the sides and was adequate except when loading or unloading a few things). The mattress was purpose-built for us - "high tech", multi-hysteresis "memory foam", "breathable" bamboo fabric, impermeable base, and very comfortable. We had bedside storage "cubbies", and mosquito net covers for the rear door opening and side windows so that we could adjust the window opening and have good ventilation.

What an adventure! I miss Australia. Two of my brothers live there. One in Adelaide, one in Melbourne. |
