|
|
Hi
I have a Shogun Sport 2000. The problem I have is when I start the engine from cold in the morning I get a loud rattling sound but it goes within 30 seconds of driving the car. The noise doesn't come back until the next time I start the car in the morning from cold again
It has been doing this on and off for the last year but now the weather has turned colder its every morning and quite a bit louder than before. Would anyone have any ideas what this could be?
Thanks |

Have you checked the level of the engine oil?
When was the engine oil and filter last changed? |

Hi
The engine oil level is fine, but I haven't had a oil filter change for about 2 or maybe 3 years I did change the engine oil last year though. Do you think the oil filter could make the car make this sound then ? Thanks for you help by the way.

Nope - I was just thinking that if the oil / filter hadn't been changed for years then the oil might be taking a while to get to the top of the engine on a cold morning and therefore the rattle could have been due to a temporary lack of top-end lubrication. |

Oh Ok, I was hoping it might have been that. Ill change the oil and the filter as it hasn't been done for a while anyway & keep on trying to find a fix for the noise.
Thanks for your help, really apricate you taking the time to answer

What engine?
And its unlikely to be engine oil related as oil is thinner when hot so would allow an engine rattle to occur more when hot than cold.
Knowing what engine would really help lol |

That'll most likely be the hydraulic tappets (valve adjusters) |

Thanks Mark thats great. I dont really know much about cars would this be fixed by adding a Valve Lifter Treatment Oil ? Or would it need a mechanic to fix it.
Thanks Again Steve |

Usually they need to be replaced...... you can try some "snake oil" but chances are slim it'll work. |
