Good evening,
I have a 2013 3.2 DI-D SWB commercial, I’ve owned the car for a few months and it has covered 147000 miles and appears in overall very good condition. The car is a manual gearbox and when I purchased the car, there was a leak which turned out to be a power steering leak and I have only just managed to address this and put the car on the road.
Never had a 4 wheel drive before and as the use will be predominantly road use, I read somewhere on this forum that it is advisable to run the car is 4 wheel drive frequently to keep everything lubricated. I did this today and after about 10 mins I noticed the amber centre diff lock flashing, just before I got home, I pulled over, switched back into 2 wheel drive and the amber light remained on. I left the car for about an hour and a half, started it up and the 2 wheel green lights were illuminated, went for a drive and the green lights remained on, I did not engage 4wd again.
However, whilst out for a run in the car, after 5 mins a very prominent driveline noise was evident, this has happened before and generally goes after 5 mins. The noise was very prominent tonight, the noise is similar to a very bad end of life wheel bearing noise, which only starts to fade a little after 40 mph, locking the steering left to right made no difference, nor did braking, however, on pulling up at a set of traffic lights, there was what felt like an urgent release of energy and a very faint clunk and the car then drove normally, all this happened in 2wd.
Just wondered if anyone can decipher with any certainty what this might be and does it sound expensive. I really like the car but concerned it might be a bit of a money pit.
Thanks Sean |

Which position did you have it in? if you had the centre diff locked it will come in.
If you run with the centre diff locked it will trash the transmission and thats an expensive rebuild. |

Begin at the beginning.
Put the vehicle in 2WD which is fully rearwards on the N/S stick and let it engage while remaining stationary and the front wheels straight it should have the lower 2 green lights on.
Remain stationary and move the same stick 1 position forwards and this is 4WD, NEVER engage any other positions while on the road.
Take the vehicle for a drive, make sure its in 2H and with the steering straight ahead and on a trailing throttle, engage 4H and it should light up all four lights within a few seconds. |

I have. It engaged the drive selector whilst the vehicle is stationary and I have also engaged the clutch.
Tonight I took the car for a drive and in both ws drive and 4 wheel drive the correct green lights were illuminated, not once did the diff lock light flash.
But, 20 mins into the drive, the whine returned and it is very loud, whilst coasting and dropping gearbox into neutral, the whine still persists and it is a load whine. Only when pulling up to a standstill did the noise stop and that strange release of energy was felt together with a faint a clunking sound and from them on the car drove normally with no whines. It’s very strange, I don’t think it’s anything serious but it pretty much happens on every journey. I haven’t driven the car far as I’m just trying to sort little niggles and get the car right. |

From your description it sounds like one of two things:
Either the centre diff lock is engaging periodically, or
you have another issue such as the rear drive shaft coming out. |

Thanks again for your reply.
I know the vehicle has not been used a great deal in the last 3 months, but pretty much every time I have driven it since Christmas the whining has happened at some point in the journey. I wonder if it is a symptom of lack of use?
Could do with finding someone trustworthy in the West Midlands who knows there way around them. Is there anyone you would recommend.
Thanks again Sean |

Got my car into a local 4x4 specialist today.
The diff light stopped flashing a few weeks ago, possibly as a result of leaving the car in 4WD mode permanently.
On the odd occasion I have switched back to 2WD, the driveline has repeated the earlier fault where it whines until the car comes to a standstill and appears to unwind, then clunk and hey presto it returns to normal.
However, I have noticed it hard to engage first gear and reverse, the garage have commented on this today. They have dropped the oil out of the transfer box and said it doesn’t look too bad and they noticed some swarf on the sump plug. They said it feels like the gears are not meshing, this could be through lack of use or it could be something more serious.
The car doesn’t appear to have been used off road, the garage agree with this, so I wonder if these niggles are a consequence of lack of use. The flashing diff warning light appears to have cured itself. The car has covered 147,000 miles. Not really sure where to go and don’t really want another money pit. The oil change might cure it? |
