Hi Guys,

any suggestions on fixing this Transmission oil leak, the threads are stripped on the Transmission block to banjo bolt, any ideas on a permanent fix as you see the guy in the garage had done a temporary fix but not holding at all, don't wont to take the Transmission out as it will be a big job, was thinking of helicoils, any other ideas.

Helicoiling is an option, sleeving is another.

I make steel sleeves and insert them instead, to do this you need a lathe and suitable taps and drills.

Machine a sleeve down from a suitably large steel bolt, centre drill and progressively drill out to the banjo bolt thread, you have your sleeve made.

Drill out the casing to the tapping size of your bolt and tap a thread, do this by coating the tap with grease or similar to catch the metal swarf until deep enough, insert the sleeve and screw in until it is flush with the surface and use threadlocking compound, leave until fully cured. Insert the banjo bolt and test for fit, now reassemble the banjo bolt assembly and run the engine and check for leaks.

Helicoiling has benefits and downsides, overtighten the banjo bolt and it tears the spiral wound helicoils out and strips more of the aluminium away leaving it requiring more specialised work to repair (specialised = expensive)

Sleeving with a metal sleeve leaves a steel to steel contact and is much stronger as you can overtighten more without further damage, you can also replace the sleeve if required and as it is steel into aluminium it will corrode in over time through electrolytic reaction, meaning it is a more permanent repair.
