Have you seen the Mitsubishi service bulletin for this issue? I found and saved the PDF and it is interesting for the information and photos, although it focuses on using a special-purpose tool.

Massive thanks for your two replies. Great text and photos.
That in line fuel filter you have fitted looks the business.

The PDF from Mitsubishi makes for very interesting reading.

I have a new micro filter and replacement o ring. I'll have to find time to have another
go at removing my old micro filter. Its getting s good grip with a self tapping screw
that seems the key to success with this job.

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated Smile

Time-wise, I was expecting it to take several hours but it only took me 30 minutes. I'd expected getting to the high pressure pump bolts to be a challenge but with a long-reach extension it proved to be easy. Pulling the filter took about 30 seconds followed by 5 minutes of wonder at the state it was in! I laid a cushion over the engine after removing the plastic cover and was very comfortable whilst doing it Smile

Update  Smile

I've eventually managed to remove old micro filter. I used an
old dog collar with a screw through it to pull it out.
The gold top part for the old filter broke away first, but I managed
to clear out of what remained of filter. It certainly needs a good tug to shift
it out. Not a job I shall be doing again any time soon.

New filter slipped in nicely along with new o ring.

Total time it took, about ninety minutes. If I had to do it again
probably take half that time.
