Hi Guys,

Need your expertise in finding out if my alternator is good or not.

I have a pajero MK2 SWB 2.8TD 4M40 with 2 batteries.

I’ve recently replaced both the batteries and below are my observations:

1. The current/ampere output from alternator is 40A at idle with voltage around 13.8V. When i rev-up the car, it reaches max 14V.

2. On headlights on only, the current/ampere output is 45A and the voltage drops to 13.1V and idle.

My questions here are:

if the alternator is giving 40A on idle, why isnt the battery voltage reaching 14.2v and why is there a drop in voltage when alternator is giving 45A on headlights load at idle?

Is 40A enough to charge the 2 batteries (70AH each)? Or is the alternator weak and should be giving more than 40A on idle ?

I personally feel that 40A is good enough current for batteries to reach 14.2v and get fully charged. Could i have something that is short circuit and drawing these 40A and this 40A is not able to reach battery and is actually being wasted by a short circuit?

P.S the 40A reading is taken by using a clamp amp meter on the positive wire coming from alternator.

Looking out for expert opinions as this is driving me crazy.

Thankss.
