the solenoid is on side of gearbox, and relay is behind dash, below speedo/tacho
dials, its not in a box just two relays side by side, the other is the indicater relay.

Posting this in this thread because I spent WAY too much time searching google and listening to bad advice.

Here is the definitive location of the OD relay and what I did to get OD working again:

1) Check solenoid operation by applying 12V to the socket at the connector under the truck.  Located on the left hand side of the truck on the side of the tranny, trace the wire back to the 2-pin connector.  1 socket is for the transmission temp switch, the other for the overdrive solenoid.  On my truck, the wire to the solenoid was black.  Apply 12V to that socket and the solenoid should click.

2)Once confirming the solenoid worked, I started working upstream to get to the relay (the thing that triggers the solenoid).  Nobody has a definitive answer on the location of this relay, the FSM shows it as a dotted outline (meaning "behind something" on the right hand side of the truck inside the glovebox (apologies, LHD drive truck here in the US...).  Remove the glovebox, disconnect and remove the main ECU, remove the blower assembly (pita) and low and behold, the relay is actually there.  No its not under the steering wheel (at least on LHD trucks) and no it isn't "on top" of the transmission (people confusing the solenoid for the relay etc).

3) Check solenoid operation by removing and applying 12V to top middle pin (red wire from connector goes to this pin) and grounding Black and Blue and white (**or whatever wire comes from your coolant temp switch**).  Black and white is the wire on my truck that went TO the solenoid.  My relay was toast, so I made a spaded jumper to jump from red (top middle docket) to black and white (top right socket).

I reconnected the ECU and grounding wires and took for a test drive, OD worked a charm.

Pictures so that hopefully others in the future don't waste as much time as I did!
