Hello. We are thinking about buying a shogun We know little about them. How easy are they to service at home by a competent amateur? Don't want the fight that ensues trying to service our Landrover Freelander(hanging head in shame!!) |

It'll depend on the year of manufacture (amount of electronic management), age (bits that wear out naturally), prior usage ( rough handling, towing heavy loads, off-road use), and most importantly how well previous owners kept up the regular maintenance schedule.
For my 2003 3rd Gen Facelift 3.5GDi Petrol LWB I've been able to successfully do several jobs but sometimes have to be inventive in creating 'special' tools. E.g.:
Change oil and filter (engine, transfer-box, differential, transmission).
Change spark plugs (hardest servicing job - needs ultra-thin walled socket and long reach bar, and inventiveness to access right-side of V6 without removing inlet manifold and related parts!).
Change disc brake pads front and rear.
Change rear brake drum shoes (hand-brake).
Replace ignition coil pack.
Replace 4WD actuator.
Replace micro-filter in the high-pressure fuel pump; installing inline fuel filter.
Replace ABS sensor on rear hub.
Replace rear brake caliper.
Replace rusted rear air-conditioner heater circulation pipes.
Replace dashboard binnacle bulbs with LEDs.
Remove dealer-installed navigation system.
Remove dealer-installed faulty remote immobiliser.
Move air-conditioner controls to lower central cluster.
Install removable tow-bar and electrics.
Install USB-C / USB-A charging points throughout.
I find as long as the Mitsubishi workshop manuals are available most tasks are within reach and having a capable servicing computer that can do more than just read diagnostic codes. I was able to reset the SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) warning when I had to disconnect an air-bag's wiring whilst doing a job.
