Hi guys, I'm back.
I'm looking at purchasing a gen 4, having read about its reliability online etc. However, having come back to POCUK forum. I'm reading all sorts of problems and nasties with both gen 3 and 4.
Makes me think I should look for a good gen 2 and save me a heap of headaches.
In saying that just exactly how do you lads rate the gen 4 for its reliability. |

By the very nature of these forums the overwhelming number of posts will be when something is amiss - not when it is going well! Hardly surprising especially with this kind of vehicle that gets a lot of rough treatment and wear and tear, too. Not doing too bad for 15 to 20 year old vehicles though! |

There are no real inherent problems and what issues they have are usually because of neglect or failure to maintain them.
When any vehicle gets a reputation for reliability, people buy them and fail to maintain them as they are a "reliable vehicle" and in many peoples minds this means servicing can be avoided and it run on a shoestring budget, the MK 4 is different so any problems will be different and it comes down to a couple of things, do you want a newer vehicle with potentially fewer issues, or an older vehicle which by its very nature will have many more problems and some very serious.
I have a MK 4 and its high mileage and to date the only problem has been with a split in the seat leather and a local saddler fixed it for a couple of cans of beer, it is religiously serviced and every body cavity has been borescoped and then treated with Bilt Hamber rustproofing inside these cavities, then the outside covered with more Bilt Hamber product and the elusive rust is now avoided. |

We've had ours for 8 years and covered a lot of kilometres in South America and Australia, including some tough tracks.
Total problems so far - zero! |
