I've been having idle problems on my 2.8 pajero N reg 1996 auto
Revs go up and down like crazy between about 300 to 800 rpm when first starting from cold I have to keep the throttle down for a minute until it settles, when engaging drive it jumps and jerks until you move off which is then fine when moving, reverse gear the car almost stalls, this also happens when the car has been left for 30 mins to cool down a little. When the car has warmed up it is faultless, Ive done the Idle reset procedure many times
Ive taken the pajero today to a mechanic and he checked for oil in the fuel filter which was clear, the engine oil isnt rising, he then disconnected the vacuum hose off the egr but didnt make any difference, to save me money he told me to clean the EGR valve or block it also to clean the Throttle body. I can see the EGR valve and know what I need to do,
Can someone point me in the right direction with cleaning the throttle body ( where is it positioned on the engine?)
Any help would be very much appreciated

Just a note starts first time when cold need to hold throttle down to keep from stalling until pulling off, if you stop at a junction the revs go crazy up and down between 800 - 300,  warmed up idle is awful in drive and worse in reverse also i notice that when idling in park the revs drop for a couple of seconds producing a plume of black soot from the exhaust. My mechanic tells me to blank the egr, I dont see that making a difference as Ive cleaned it all out, also clean the Throttle body, where is this within the bay? Ive used a bottle of redex in the tank also to no avail
Im really thinking of selling this wagon after only a month of ownership the engine feels as if it wants to jump out of its bay its that bad, I was told by loads of people that Pajeros are a reliable truck, mine came with a full service history from when it was imported in 2007, so I went for it, in honesty I like driving it but with the way it is performing I dont trust it

Could someone please share some information on this problem before I take a big shovel and slamming it into my forehead

The throttle body on your 2.8 Pajero is usually near the air intake manifold, just follow the air filter housing and you should find it right past that.

Hi, I have a 2005 shogun auto with the 3.2 engine.  I have this problem which has just started a couple of weeks  ago. When I came to very busy traffic lights I had to select neutral very quickly because the car was jumping trying to go forward.  On returning home I cleaned the EGR, removed the manifold because it does get a lot of carbon in there and the inlet ports. It was still the same but seemed to have better acceleration. I checked the throttle motor and found that it wasn’t moving, the power was there but the motor is dead. I have been trying to find a second hand replacement of the throttle actuator motor but no luck yet.
