I don't have a 1996 2.5 like yourself. I have more than likely a earlier year 2.8TD. However I am essentially trying to achieve the same ish information. I am swapping a 4m40 into a customers 1987 Dodge Raider. Which had a gasser engine. My plan is to attach a tester light to the white wire coming from the injection pump and see if there is a signal coming from that.

What I am trying to figure out is what the white wire and black wire do on that sensor. Which hopefully will also let me know the sensor is working. On the truck chassis wiring harness I only have one wire for the tachometer signal. I've looked all through the electrical manual for the 4m40 and haven't found what I am looking for. Maybe someone has a page number that they can share. I will report back with my findings and maybe what I figure out will help you out with your problem.

Cheers,
-Willy
