|
|
Hi
I have owned my 1999 Mondeo TD now for a couple of year's and have always had trouble with it starting from cold, Its had at least two sets of glow plugs fitted plus the usual service requirments but its still a pain, expecially in the winter months! the car starts fine once its heated up and after the initial start up.
I have also checked to make sure there is a decent feed going to all four plugs and this is fine too, it also helps if I heat ywice before starting, any advice would be appreciated as I'm now planning on putting this car on the market.
Cheers

Older Fords were renowned for having batteries that were too small for the car but I think that should have been sorted on yours. Even if the engines spins over quite quick it might be that is ready for a new battery or alternator.
Dependant on mileage, if its done a few it might be worn and low on compression, usually it spins over a little bit faster than it should.
The only other thing I can offer it to check if the injection pump has an automatic cold start that is not functioning properly. Some diesel do and some don't and I haven't worked that much on the turbo diesel fords just the n/a ones.
Hope this gives you a place to start.

from someone who has only ever run TD Mondeos and escorts, you need the proper battery, and for the cold, you need to make sure the jacket they have has been replaced around the battery, also, see if you can park it the other way round, chill factor knocks the batteries about, but where they sit, they have a nasty cold blow from the grill, right onto them.
They are the same as all diesels, glow plugs have to be spot on etc etc, and injectors need a bottle of cleaner through them, but if it starts in the warm Ok, for sure it is the power out of the battery, with the glow plugs snatching the inital boost.
The other one is, again like 2.5 Paj, make sure your cam belt is OK, if it has been a bad night, they to, snap on initial fire up. |

Many Thanks Andrew and Richie for the help! the car has Bugged me totally since I owned it, I took it to a diesel specialist who removed the Injectors and tested them which thankfully was ok, it could well be the compresion as the car has done 107,000 but I can Honestly say it does'nt take any oil, I'm beggining to think it could well be a cold start valve problem after what you mentioned! when I first turn the Ignition on to start it you can hear something under the bonnet which is making a strange ticking noise for a couple of seconds then cuts out, it generally sounds like something electronic trying to work but is Jammed or seized, Its definitley coming from the pump but I hav'nt got a clue where to pin point it.
Cheers

hi what you hear is the cold start advance solonoid it screws directly into the injection pump on the front with a rubber cap covering the end of it and a lead coming out of it going to the wiring harness on the pump
they are over £100 quid for a new one but it does sound like its working as usually you dont hear anything when they are broke
i recently sold a mondeo td i had the same problem owned it over 2 winters and it was a pain in the butt both times
ford fitted an ecu the did the advance on the car
thats were they went wrong !
the old one was much better
take it to a diesel specialist and get them to check the timing it may need advancing slightly more
only problem is if it is 2 advanced it will sound like a transit van till warm but it does cure the starting problem |

Hello Hollow
Many thanks for the reply, this car was a total Pain ever since we had it with starting problems, its now been sold yesterday after a long time advertiseing, I thought I would avertise it cheaper than the others on the same year and mileage I had seen but still could'nt shift it, no one even came and looked at it , It finally went yesterday to the first guy who came and looked at it for a song .
Cheers
