Glow Plugs before buying.

Make sure you have checked all your connections first, all connection should be clean/day and electrically sound.

Work from the battery to the fuse/relays onto the bus-bar, if any connection is suspect, disconnect battery negative, clean and make good the offending connections refit negative battery lead.

Now turn on ignition check you have 12+ voltage at all points right through to the plugs.

If you still suspect its plugs, visual inspection, remove them one at a time, they should tell you how well they are working.

In the picture you’ll see 4 plugs number one plugs heavy carbon build up not working well (due to high resistance 1.5 ohms). Plugs 2, 3, 4 very light carbon build up, slight greyness to tip working well (correct resistance at 1.0 ohms).

If you find that visually they look ok, check the resistance of each plug, (use ohms/voltage meter) make sure they all read the same value. Replace plugs or renew.

Club Shop. Armed with your model, year of manufacture, engine type, chassis number go to club shop, look under (parts) (glow plugs) look down the list till you find the right plugs to match your vehicle.

If this all checks out ok.

Check relays, an easy way to do this is with a 12 volt test bulb, negative/positive leads with small crocodile clips on the ends of the cables.
Clip the positive lead to the top of number one plug, the negative lead to the negative terminal of the battery, turn on ignition, should hear click and preheat warning light come on, wait for warning light to go out or second click, now your test bulb should stay on for about 5 seconds then click off. Turn off ignition.

Hopefully you have found the problem by now, but if not there is a couple more things, one is the ECU (See post by Fletch) the other is PM me - too much to go into here.

Looks like all to, often, new members just buy new plugs and find its something else.

Hope this helps you to find and cure your starting problem.

Phillip
