my power steering stopped working while i was stuck in sand steering from side to side, but it did work over 3000 rpm, seems a common problem.
so having removed the pump and dismantled it, found the pressure relief valve stuck open.
this is easily fixed... remove the union where the high pressure pipe attaches, you will see a silver pin sticking up, with the pump upside down, gently tap the bottom of the pump with a small hammer, the valve and spring will pop out. the plunger on mine had a small burr all round which was catching on the pump body, remove the burr with a small oil stone. pop it all back together and hey presto....
has been ok for over 200 miles now. hope this helps others with the same problem... |
