I see you saved it as a PPT (PowerPoint Template)
if you open the PPT
and Save As
select PPS (PowerPointSlideshow)
the filesize will drop drastically |

thanks i think many people will find that powerpoint presentation really usefull. Can I ask 1 question, Am I right in saying the glowpugs switch off when up to temperature, hence the added fuel filter heating? Cheers

Hi Martyn
Yes, Hopefully when the oil reaches temperature and is maintained by the filter heater, then the heater plugs will only be needed if temperature dips below that set by the VOW" block temp. controller.
Did that sound correct?.
Anyway the answer to your question is yes. It just seemed to me to be a shame that the free heat from the engines cooling system was just going to waste.
I think I am right in saying that not only VO. but Diesel benefits from being heated before injection. If I am wrong, someone will dive in and let me know.
I have submitted a set of drawings to an engineering company in China, who are interested in producing and exporting a small heat exchanger designed for use in a VO system.
The heat exchanger will be similar to the "C.A.T." exchanger seen on ebay but hopefully will be a lot cheaper.
Anyway, we'll wait and see what happens.
Regards

Hi Steve
thanks for the info. Good luck with china. I get a few things manufactured out there and apart from the price, I find they bend over backwards much nicer than dealing with a company in the uk!! (and now you can phone them on skype and they all speak english!!!)
Let me know how you get on as I would be interested in one.
Cheers

About 2 months, but it may have been caused by an airlock in the unit itself. |

It does matter which way you mount the vow2. I read that some people leave it hanging from the fuel lines.
No doubt some peolple get away with that but I think it's by chance.
Mounting or hanging at the wrong angle can leave a pocket where air can get trapped.
I've mounted mine horizontally on a fixed bracket, but even now I am not sure if it is still possible for a pocket to exist somewhere!. |

Hi Steve, I was talking to the guy from vow2 and he was warning me about heating desiel as it stopped it acting as a lubricant. Have you hear about this before? As I still like your idea of heating the fuel filter, reducing how long the vow has to stay on. Have you found anything to insulate the copper piping yet?

Hi Martyn
Can't understand why david would say beware of heating oil as the basis of the vow2 heater is to heat oil by way of the glow plugs.
Also, I dont believe that heating oil to the lowish temperature that we require would affect its lubricity very much.
The study carried out for |Elsbett of germany is freely available on their web and states that VO at room temp. is not recommended for engines.
It's well worth a read.
Might be worth checking with vow again to make sure of what he said.
Kindest regards
Steve |

Hi Again Martyn
I've just read your message properly (should have done that first time shouldn't I)
Thought you were talking about heating oil when in fact you were talking about Diesel.
Well the same applies. In fact many car manufacturers now put diesel heaters in as standard like the pug 405 di which has a heater built in to the filter housing.

Hi again martyn
If you click this link then look at VO history you'll get the details about the different types of oils and their needs to be burnt in an engine.

Cheers for the info. I must admit I was quite surprised as it was the first time I had heard of any problems caused by heating the desiel. I think your design has the best of both worlds as I wouldn`t be happy having glow plugs working all the time. All that electric being wasted!!! |
