.... for me in plain English, what the A/T switch does? When would you want to use it or not?

Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick, think of the the A/T switch as Sport mode, Economy and a Hold feature for say, Icy roads or descending down a steep incline or hill.

In the POWER mode the gear change will change gear at a much higher rpm allowing more speed before changing gear.

Leaving the switch in the centre position for normal driving the vehicle will change gear a lot sooner with a preset rev change.

If you are in "L" and set the Hold mode the gearbox will not change above Low gear. In 2nd the Hold will allow a change down to Low and up again.

I hope that is clear, a bit longwinded.

Super select Gearbox gives the A/T switch plus the usual manual settings, which work the same way, the difference is the POWER switch or Sport mode as I call it.

If you put the Auto Box into 'L' it won't go above low.
Put in '2' and you will have Low and Second Gear.

Place the A/T Setting to hold and the Auto Box will pull away in second not low. - This is for use in snow and ice and cuts down the amount of torque getting through to the wheels.

BMW's have a similar arrangement - their settings are sport, normal and ice
