I've updated this topic with the latest figures from the DVLA website

OK folks and newbies all.
Welcome to the best place for info about Pajeros  8) .

Idea People seem to be very confused about how much car tax they'll have to pay after the latest budget and the numerous scares about the tax rate hike for 4x4s, so to try to clarify this for new members here is the definitive answer to your road tax questions:

If, like most of us, your Paj/Shogun was manufactured BEFORE March 2001

Rates for cars and vans registered before 1 March 2001 are based on engine size. The rates for these cars from April 2010 are shown in the table below:

Engine size (cc)

2010-11

Not over 1549 = £125

Over 1549 = £205

Please note, this IS YEAR OF MANUFACTURE, NOT the date of registration in UK for imports.[/b]

If you are lucky enough to own a  Paj/Shogun first registered after March 2001, you will be governed by CO2 emissions data,
Here's the DVLA bands for cars registered after 2001:
From April 2010, already registered higher emitting cars will be charged up to £30 more and lower emitting cars will be charged up to £30 less.

Band

CO2 (g/km)

2010-11 standard rate

A Up to 100 £0

B 101-110 £20

C 111-120 £30

D 121-130 £90

E 131-140  £110

F 141-150  £125

G 151-165 £155

H 166-175 £180

I 176-185 £200

J 186-200 £235

K* 201-225 £245 *[color=blue]Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006
.

L 226-255 £425

M Over 255 £435

.
I've left this here even though it was the previous government:
You may like to read this quote from a letter written 27th september 2006  by Tim Yeo MP:
" I would like to let Ms Dales know that we did not look at the case for applying new rates of Vehicle Excise Duty retrospectively. This means that we did not recommend that VED rates should be changed for those who have already purchased their vehicles"

So we should be OK. Wink

Re a couple of queries via PM, I emailed the DVLA. T
his was my email and their reply:

Subject: Car tax rates

Hi,

Would you please  just clarify for me, that in the case of an imported car, the rate of road fund tax payable is based on the year the car was manufactured, not the year of import?

Am I also correct in thinking this is due to the unavailability of emissions data from vehicles manufactured prior to March 2001?

Thanks,

Regards

Thank you for your email.

You are correct when you say that the road tax of an imported vehicle is worked on its date of manufacture.

If the vehicle was first registered before 1/3/01 it would be worked out on the basis of the engine size. But it it was registered abroad after that date the road tax would be worked out on the basis of its CO2  emissions. This is because the CO2  figures should be available for any vehicle which was first registered either on or after that date.

I  hope that this information has clarified matters for you.

Regards

David S Evans

I think anyone with any common sense should realise that you cannot Tax 4x4s as they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. This 4x4 gas guzzler is all Spin / Media hype. As Anne's post rightly says it's all about emissions. Therefore any vehicle (usually larger) could fall in to that banding. Someone said on the news that taxing the gas guzzling 4x4s that footballers drive will cut Glovbal Warming, right, like David Beckham will be queuing at his local Post Office complaining that he VED has gone up to £400 This is just another tax that will affect high earners.

What year was  your Paj manufactured? I know there's a few around that have 'wrong' registrations for the year of manufacture, and appear to have registrations showing the date of import. Looks great, but I expect the DVLC computer will then tax you in a different class.. Wink .?

So it should be an 'N' reg, or whichever was the other reg for the year.
You should have paid £180, or £99 for 6 months - in fact, a bit less than that, cause it's just gone up a little bit.

So, if it says year of manufacture 1995 on your V5C document, you've been overcharged.
