I have used a number of different suites for ripping DVD's and bar none i will plum for

ANYDVD (for region changing)
DVD-Shrink to rip em
and then ifoedit to play about with them (removing region coding etc)
and nero to burn em

One of the things to look for is the fact that you dont need a lot of the info on the original disc.

you may not have a dts sound system which can use upwards of 300mb of space.

you may not want all the sub audio tracks (french spanish etc).

the fact is most dvd rippers compress all this data to fit on a 4.7gb disc which in turn means there is a price to it all.

99.9% of the time you would be hard pushed to see any degridation in picture quailty but try doing saving private ryan or any other film that runs for nearly 3 hours + and your will start to see pixelation.

dvd shrink allows you to remove unwanted crud prior to burning the disc and upping the quaility of the picture a bit more then would be possible with other programs.

I do a fair bit of video editing for friends and family transfering VHS to DVD for them ...holiday vids and the like and hate making costers.

at the end of the day it is what you get used to.

I'm still a bit new to all this stuff so be gentle with me !!

I've been using Clone Dvd to back up my films. Does that compress the
files ??, because even LOTR wasn't a problem and thats a pretty long film.

Even with two layer discs, I just remove all the extra junk and off it goes.

I've noticed though that a lot of my two layer disc films have two versions
of the film on it. If you look at Planet of the Apes, it has a full length version
with a commentary about it !!

Guess who backed up the wrong one !!!!!! Embarassed

to be honest vanner it would take somebody who is realy picky to say it is crud.

the sort of person who spends thousands of pound on his stereo equipment and even more on building a special house round it and filling it with different plants to improve the acuostics etc etc.

i have seen lord of the rings 1 2 and 3 on one dvd.
my home dvd player makes a grand job of the reproduction but my laptop (2.6ghz p4 with a 64mb gforce card in it) struggles and gives bad pixalation.

i reckon once the film in question drops below 1.2gb it can be a bind to watch if there are some fast moving shots in it.
