when i shift to 4H on Tarmac i feel that it is less power than in 2H mode, but if i use the 4L,i feel like i has a New,More Powerful Engine! Are this is normal?

Hi ,

Putting a mark 1 pajero into 4WD on tarmac is a very bad idea.    The Mk1 doesn't have a centre differential , and you will do a lot of damage if you use 4WD  on a surface which will not allow the wheels to slip , and you will experience something called "Diff Windup" .

On a Mk 1 , only use 4WD on Mud, snow , gravel etc.

However,i didn't has any problem with the system use it almost every time when i carry something Heavy since i Own it last Year Wink !

I also use when i climb a Very long and step hill, sometime use 4L feel like sitting in a Sport car Laughing  Laughing  Laughing !

But when i reach corner i experience it's harder to turn than in 2H,if i reach Concreate area it will make a Tyre Slip Noise!

Forget about Tarmac, last month i Off-road at a Rainy Night(Getting mud onto The Pajero Body everywhere)i climb a lond and step hill with a soft mud,at first i climb with 2H,then i shift to 4H to prevent any Stuck since i feel it is not enought Traction,In 4H mode i climb the hill i feel there is lesser Power develop on the Wheel than in 2H

Example:When in 2H i can Start up at 2Nd Gear and can shift until 3Rd,but in 4H i can only start-up with 1Th and shift until 2Nd only!

So i Use 4L it is very Powerful and alot of traction, climb the hill very fast Wink

When in 4H i accidently stuck the Left Front Wheel in a Mud i acclerate and i hear the Front wheel are Spinning so the System are working!

Anything can i do to check the 4WD System is working properly?

My 4WD Indication Light on Dash are not light up when i put the Transfer Shift in 4H N or 4L!

as said, you really shouldn't use a mk1 in 4wd, either h or l on tarmac!

4h is for loose surfaces, or snow and the like.
4l is for mud, or when you need more traction. but not on tarmac!

if both the lights are not showing, that suggests to me blown bulbs, but if one is one, then double check that the 4wd is engaging,
sometimes the wee lug on the engaging   mechanism breaks off, and the plate needs to be replaced.

when you see how small that lug is, you realize more that you need to be gentle when putting it into 4wd!

I have Manual Hub on my Pajero,so i only have one Light that show 4 Wheel Interconnecting by a Black Line with a Transfer Case Logo on centre Wink

My problem is now i check the bulb,it is ok but doesn't Light up,i assume there is no electric feed to the Holder!Does it has any Switch or Sensor around the Transfer-Case Area?

As you say it is dangerous to shift into 4WD while at Tarmac,so it need an Indication(Just Like the Handbrake Warning light)to inform Driver that the 4WD are Engaged!

I crawl under the Paj yesterday to check what has happen, after i Read the Haynes Manual i find the 4WD Light swich position on the Transfer Case,i see there has 2 Wire Hanging Around it,then i Connect this 2 Wire together and turn the ignition switch to ON Position then the Green light Light-Up!I think it was the Switch Problem and maybe Off-Road has torn out the Wire! Rolling Eyes

I heard that if the Transfer-Case in 4H will be more power than in 2H because the engine power are transmitted to all 4 Wheel, but i didn't feel so much? Rolling Eyes

If 4H if Exerted less Power(Torque)Than 2H so what use the with 4H?

If in SS4 System, they can use 4H in Tarmac(Full-Time 4WD) so it will also reduce power but increase Fuel usage, what benefit usually Gained from using 4H?
