Probably not a lot of help ... from Portsmouth
Although ... it does give a good idea of the typical cost of replacing the seal ... remember though ...
Just replacing the seal CAN be compared to putting a plaster on a compound fracture ... clears the external symptoms, but doesn't solve the underlying problems.
FREQUENTLY, if the seal has gone, there are internal issues with the actual pump ... a rebuild / refurb replacement could cost you £5-600 all in... there's quite a lot of labour to do the job ... which is why even Chris Cars charge £200 to replace a seal that costs them a couple of quid
Don't be alarmed though ...
MOST people with this problem get the seal replaced and continue to have several years trouble free with the fuel pump!

|

I have a 1994 Pajero 2.8 tdi auto which has covered 130,000Km, it always starts perfectly but within 2-5 minutes or when driving it has been coughing and spluttering to a halt, followed then by same problems as a lot of people have already posted. I have replaced the filter and still the same.
This morning after seeing a post on POCUK about starting I decided to start it as soon as the red heater light went out (approx 2 seconds) - Wham it kicked in fine and has not faltered once ( This morning it had climbed to -3 before I went out - so I used the winch throttle to keep it at a steady 1000 rpm until my front screen had heated to move the ice). In the past I have been letting the red heater light go out and waiting for a distinct click from over on the passengers side of the bulkhead - which has been anything up to 10 - 15 seconds approx. Is it possible that this post starting click is something switching off current to protect the heater plugs, in which case I have always been trying to start from cold with no or limited heater plugs, which in turn has been the root of the problem? It just seems strange that following some advice given about waiting for the distinct click as the weather has deteriorated I have had starting issues - now just following the above it seems to have been cured - I dont think of it is a fluke as I drive for a living and have had the same problem every morning even a couple of occasions when it would not start and ran down the battery at silly oclock in the morning. Advice would be appreciated on this one. Thx. |

|
|
Hello all , this is my first post after much research on here...
With the cold weather our 2.8 td paj had started to be a pain to start in the morning , checking the glow plug found two open circuit and the other two showing 20-25 Mohm, replaced all four - 12.95 each from PCS motor factors in clay cross derbyshire (in stock and open christmas eve), Checked the volts from the glow plug relay , and observed that the glow plugs still remain on for approx 2 mins after the glow plug light goes out on the dash. All now showing around 2.5ohm.
Whilst having the inter-cooler out of the way, found that the last owner had actually bypassed the fuel filter, taking the inlet pipe off and connecting it directly to the fuel pump. Just to make the job look nice they had fitted nice new shiney pipes that dissappeared down into the depths of the engine bay so that even with a torch it is impossiable to see that it had been done. I wonder if it was the owner or was it a cowboy garage....
The nice new pipes are long enough to plumb the fo filter in properly so i did so...... Guess what can prime the system and get the paj (named Barney) to run for about 30 seconds before he cuts out. Barney was not a happy. I was working on a time limit as wife wanted him to run some of her staff about in the snow so i reluctantly bypassed the filter once more and he is running ok.
So i am thinking either air is getting in via the fuel filter or the pump seal has gone.
As the fuel seal seems to be a common problem and Barney seems ok with the fuel coming straight from the tank and not going up over the fuel filter was wondering if any one has tried fitting an inline fuel filter or lowering the original filter? If the state of the oil that i just dropped out of him is anything to go on not much deisel is leaking through.
Also this bypassing the filter may be an emergency get me home fix as all that is needed is a 10mm spanner for the intercooler and a screw driver! Lord knows how long ours has been running like this!
Another story is the wife filled him up with 70 quid worth of unleaded and drove him ... Dont think that would have done the fuel pump any good either! It was only after filling the back up with bales of hay and not being able to restart him did she realise what she had done... That was 300 miles ago and fingers crossed all is well!
Think will eventually have to have the fuel pump seals done / Fuel pump tested / injectors tested. Has anyone had the seals changed in derbyshire and can recommed where to go / where not to go....
Cheers , now to go finish off the turkey! |

Hi Barney, I had the same trouble with my paj--I contacted Mark03 who came down fron Essex to Birmingham to renew my seal. He only charged me the usual cost £175.00 plus the petrol money. He arrived this morning, done the job, and the difference it has made to the car is amazing. I would recommend him to anyone, this guy really knows his stuff. Thanks to the forum.

Had the cylinder head crack on Barney , nice big cracks on units 2 and 3. no need to pressure test !. Had the fuel pump out at same time as changing the head , fwd seal of the pump had gone hard and when squeezed spider cracks could be seen. Also fitted new fuel filter and plumbed it back in. looks like the head had cracked due to faulty injectors, me thinking the bypassing of the fuel filter had something to do with this . Used PT Diesel here in chesterfield, 135 quid to overhaul all 4. Barney is running sweet now! Will post my lessons learned on fuel pump and cylinder head job later. Off to play in the snow. Where do i get a snow plough for the front from! |

Just thouhgt i would share my 2p worth.
I bought a Paj 2nd hand and it was running really bad.
I had the cambelt re-done and timed correctly and it ran Spot On Appart from the cold start.
Once running it would run ok but as soon as you left it over night, it was a pig to start.
The Paj had been sat still for a few months before i bought it aswell.
Took it back to the garage ad explained the problem.
They removed the fuel pump and took it to a specialist.
He found that the fuel pump was all out of timing and the seals were, well knackered.
A re-set ( retimed ) and rebuilt with new seals set me back £200.
A New pump would have been around £400.
OMG - The Paj now drives like a completely different car, no smoke, no hessitant starts, runs like a dream.
So what i am trying to say here is, Money Well Spent. (Fuel Pump Seals ) will more than likely be your problem.
Hope this Helps.

bullring...that price sounds good, am lookin for someone who can do my fuel pump seal. diesal pajero, 2.8 93/94 L reg. Reading all that has been put on this forum you may as well have been talkin about my car....its been used as a great work horse, collecting plaster and plasterboard and the like, fitting 7 in on family outings but just lately i've felt like puttin a torch under it and settin it on fire, it starts with a struggle and then the rev's die, (if i dont let the rev's die off before i drive off ,it will cut out on me a few hundred yards up the road ), it takes about 4/5 goes to get it started again with a cough and splutter then it will be ok untill the next morning when it starts all over again. I have had the fuel filter renewd, and 2 new batterys as it wouldnt start one evening and the aa checked , the batterys were not charging as they should be so they recommended that i get new one's. |

Hi, just to let you know that there's a guy in the business unit opposite mine, in Digbeth, Birmingham, who has very recently changed the front pump seal on my Shogun 2800. The car has never run this well in the 6 years I've owned it!
While he was amongst the engine bay he noticed that the water pump was leaking and that one of the vanes in the vaccuum pump needed repair. He did all this, added new antifreeze and the seal replacement for £270-00.
An absolute bargain, especially considering how well the thing's running.
If anyone in the Midlands would like his number please PM me on this forum.
