Sorry if this has been asked before, but I've had a quick mooch on the 'search facility' but came out empty handed.

We have our new (to us), '97 V6 SWB Shogun and one of it's main duties will be to tow our caravan.  The first thing I need to do is to actually fit a tow bar, but before I do that I noticed today that a passing shogun had a tow ball fitted to the metal thingy in the middle of the bumper.  Could I fit a tow ball to this and tow my caravan, or is it too high?

way too high caravans are set to run with a ball height of 17 1/2 inches i think there is a drop plate hitch available that mounts there but i'd not recommend that for regular use get a proprietary heavy duty towbar especially if you have a large heavy van try your local breakers if you don't fancy buying new !

the metal thingy you refer to in the back bumper is only a recovery eye. not strong enough to tow a caravan. and prob not legal. have a proper tow bar fitted.
look at towshure site or towtrust do google search.

A bloke in Wales got stopped at a police check point and was not permitted to proceed towing his van. He could leave the van and continue his journey solo though.

So he unhitched his van from the ball fitted to his towing eye and went to get a LEGAL towbar fitted.

A fine is pending
