Tuning needs to be done carefully on a well maintained engine
The Bosch ve links are good Reading but need to be done in moderation
heat is a big problem with diesel tuning and care must be taken with overhauling the cooling system and the intercooler
before you start lifting the top of the boost enrichment device you need to prepare to catch the tps/Lps spacers if you have an auto
I would recomend glueing them onto the tps baseplate if you plan on altering settings regularly
also vent the rocker box to the atomosphere or a catch can to prevent the intercooler efficiency lowering due to oil contamination.
The egr is worth removing if you are looking to make real power gains
But remember to budget for a new head as the tuning will increase the chance of cracking
factory 2.8 edc engines push 140 odd bhp so there is pleanty of scope to wind up the pump and boost on early 2.8's |

Yes, I'm ahead, I've done everything you have mentioned above apart from gluing the spacers, will do this next time. I'm going to buy a big intercooler to fit at the front where the A/C rads were, (ripped them out last week, with the pump and pipes ect...) Will also buy an EGTS exsust gas temp sensor, and a air inlet sensor (after intercooler) So I can keep a check on things.
Today I have worked on some of those mods that you have done, i.e took the cap off and rotated the diaphram so the large area on the shaft is facing forward giving more movement to the fuel pin.onething that did occur/concern me was when I was refitting the cone shaped shaft down the hole was would I bend the fuel pin? So I shon a torch down there and did not see the pin! I saw the hole bore where it should of been. Not knowing enough about the pump I thought maybe this is ok and the pin would come out onto the cone shaft once assembled and once the engine is running? Or maybe its stuck, i think i read somewhere that it is spring loaded. Did you see your fuel pin?
Anyway with the intercooler back on i went for a test drive, I don't think anything has changed, it's about the same, still no black smoke. So tomorrow I'm going to turn the main fuel screw 1/4 turn. Then see what happends? |

Saturday morning now, before adjusting the main fuel screw, I have thought I better road test again with more turbo boost and also I screwed down the boost smoke screw on top of the pump. Yes this made a difference, the truck has more pull now, it was a cold moring though 3 0c so combustion would of been good, nevertheless i do think she pulls better. Still no smoke.
so i will move the main screw a 1/4 turn inwards today.
As regards to maintaunance (a well maintained truck) i service her every 5000km, also she has a new rad, better still with the A/C rads gone she is running slightly cooler now, ( i had to adjust the auto choke to get her back to idel speed)
Every thing ok at moment, I won't be going mad like those yanks did,
just a few minor adjustments here and there, |

Back again
Turned the main screw now 1/4 turn CW, what a transformation, alot more power now with just a hint of black smoke on hard getaways.
Also moved the star gear 1/4 turn CW and filed off 1mm of the plastic collar on plunger shaft.
Its a different truck, responsive, fast, smooth, |
