Is it safe to fit a drop plate and a tow ball to the tow hitch instead of fitting a towbar? all I tow is a trailer with no more than 1/2 a ton an to me the bar where the towing eye is bolted to looks more than up to the job. Has anyone done this?

Cheers

Jim

An engineer near me made up one for his Mk 1. It has some bracing going back to the chassis as well as being bolted to the eyelet holes that you mentioned. All he tows is a small trailer too, so you might be okay. It's not recommended though.

The problem with the using the drop plate is that the mounting is designed for pulling and not for the pushing at occurs when towing a trailer which can lead to damage to the chassis. You also have issues of towball height unless you use a drop plate which further adds to the strain.

There are plenty of towbar firms about - if you do a search on the site you should get some leads.
