As I am about to go back on the road, have no intention of paying for accommodation, and camping in a rain soaked tent is not to my liking, I thought I would put a bed in my car.

The front passenger seat was easily removed by loosening four bolts. The bed frame was made from redwood and the surface from 9mm plywood. The bed is wide enough for me to put a self-inflating mattress on top of and narrow enough to allow the right read passenger seat to be used.

One end of the bed is supported by a sturdy plastic box (where the front passenger seat was) and in which I can store tools. The other end of the bed is supported on some old carpet tiles lying on top of the lid of the car's tool stowaway. With the two supports situated as they are, the frame of the bed is raised above the left rear passenger seat, which is now not crushed by my weight.

I shall now install an invertor, with which to run my computer, charge up my Skype phone and power my electric razor on those odd occasions that I use it.

I'm 5' 11". I think a 6 footer could manage.

For larger people I would have to make a diagonal bed and lose the use of the right rear seat.

That looks really nicely designed and made, excellent job. I guess you've got something to stick over the windows to block out light and people peering in?

Of course - those of us in LWB Pajeros don't have any problem in the bed department. Two factory methods for making a full length double bed...

I shall be in the Irish countryside so there won't be any light other than the Milky Way. And if anyone peers in then I have my bum to greet them with!

Hi JayBee

Thats a fantastic idea you have there. It would be great for such as the puter and radio when one goes plane spottong could even have a stove in there for the odd cuppa.
You dont think it would be possible for the dimentions do you? I would much appeciate them.

OT - You could convert this to a double bed with a hinge. That would mean that the driver side wouldn't get squashed with the other bed as it can fold ontop of the passenger side bed.

Here is a rough drawing with measurements for the bed.

I am in a hurry to catch the ferry so I advise anyone replicating this to measure again and make sure everything is as it should be.

The top of the plan is the dash end. The bottom with supports rests on the raised plastic edge of the tool compartment.

Use redwood or similar solid softwood for the frame. Do not use that softwood that consists of a number of pieces dovetailed together as it will only give way under weight.

You can use any structure to hold the other end up. I used a strong plastic tool box that could hold my entire weight when I stood on it and then used some wood offcuts to reach the underside of the frame.

The 61cm measurement at bottom left represents the distance from corner to the beginning of the ellipse. Use a pair of compasses and some cardboard to trace our the curve of the arch.
