as the moderate group will be going down the steps, and the hard group will be going up, one of the groups will have to do the steps at the start of the day, and other group at the end of the day, so we dont meet each other halfway up
I dare say we will be able to sort something out Mark |

SID73 are you sure you want to lead the middle group? I'm happy enough to do it and I know the local roads, etc in between the green lanes but if you want to do it that's cool. There's also a bunch of more interesting lanes than the usual suspects listed on the first post, they're no harder than the others but are worth taking in if the groups are smallish.
Anyone else have direct experience of the V gulley? |

Paul. We have got the leaders covered thankyou. If we need your help to lead I will let you know.
All lanes will be recce'd by myself and other members before the actual laning day at the mega meet. |

some more info about the V-Gulley... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
An absolute classic "Bocage" greenlane, one could devout a whole blog to this alone (might do that one day). Most laners start at the west end going downhill into Glyn Ceriog ,although either way is possible. Starts off just a farmers track, but quickly turns into a deep gorge with the base been a V shape (hence the name), due to the stream which runs down the middle. Very narrow with tree roots sticking out you can definitely expect damage, in fact I've never been with group with hasn't suffered some damage.
CB aerials, roof racks, mirrors, tires, windows ,lights, snorkels soon get ripped off. Drivers who have never done this type of lane before quickly get disorientated due to the poor light and overhead tree cover, so expect a "roll over"., Although safe, ie no drop, recovery is made difficult by lack of space. In parts its impossible to open the doors, so soft tops any advantage, climbing over trucks (or under) is common, as the banks are impossible to climb due to the loose earth. Photo shoots made worse by the poor light, although in recent years the vegeation has been cut back. At the east end (bottom) the lane leads out straight into the narrow lanes of Glyn Ceriog, so make sure if in a group everyone knows where to go next as some will have lost comms cause of broken CB aerials. It is possible to loop at either end and go back, plus at the at the bottom there's a convenient hard flat standing just before the UCR to fix punctured tires, you'll not fix them on the lane!
West end (top) SJ189382; east end (bottom) SJ200382
At the bottom if you turn right (west) and proceed to the mini-roundabout there's some toilets, and a shop with a convenient off road place to fix your truck! |
Out of curiosity, who wrote that about the 'V' Gulley? Yes, it can be a problem, and vehicles do sometimes lie down on their sides, but that's because the drivers don't follow the golden rule - 'straddle the V'. There's one bit where one side is near vertical, but your tyres on that side WILL climb it and hold you level. They're kept in place by the slope on the other side. Apart from that, it's a doddle!
I often travel this route (solo) on my way to other places. It's an interesting drive, provided you keep your wits about you.
Now, you'll find the Dog Leg interesting, especially if you think you'll make it with stuff on the roof!!
Regards, |

Hi John, it was on the list of links that Mark sent over on the other site! The plan is to provide more accurate descriptions and photos once I have driven them myself! |

I've driven the V gulley and I think denjo has too, or is about to? When I went, it was partially blocked by a fallen tree, I'd reported it to the council but have not had a reply - maybe I should chase them up? I went down, because it was damp weather, in the dry going "up" is possible but in the wet you might struggle for traction etc. I think I posted my trip on here so it will be in the archive somewhere. As I understand the local roads, if you don't want to do the V gulley but want to meet on the other side by alternative route, its a bit of a trip round.
I'm hoping the organisers can come up with some interesting lanes in addition to the listed ones, there's little gems out there which are worth taking in. |

Paul, if you wish to organise a laning trip in North Wales to take in the lanes you have mentioned, then by all means go ahead and do so
9 out of 10 of the members partaking in this trip have not driven any of the aforementioned lanes, and so these are the ones we will sticking to. We have successfully organised many many offroad days and camping trips, and so will stick to the protocol that we have found to be the most successful.
Thankyou however for your input |
