There is a special way to change the ATF - it's no good just taking the plug out of the gearbox sump as you only get a little bit out.

Information HERE

I change my engine oil and filter every 5,000km

Ok just picked up a 1990 mitsi pajero jap import with a genuine 141 thousand kilometers on it, it is just so sweet to drive! however as it has only done 33k in the last 12years and despite the owner keeping a fantastic record of everything ever done to the ca i can find no mention of atf changes,so as the change is slightly " harsh"? overdrive works fine as does everything else, but i intend doing a full atf change soon,
can anyone give me a definitive answer on what the old girl should have in her? please?
and how about the atf filter anything special to do there? or just a standard filter?

on a slightly differerent note, the engine although a 2.5tdi has the words
cyclone diesel on it? first time ive ever seen one is it something special?

Any thoughts on Castrol Transmax Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF? It implies it's suitable on the datasheet but doesn't mention SP III.

Afraid nothing special, it's a name given to a range of 4D56 engines, some have that display on the rocker cover, others not. My '88 Mk1 does.

To be safe I would get some ATF that actually says it is SPIII - Like Millermatic SPIII WS - HERE - that's what I have used for years.

If its not on the spec sheet then it doesn't meet the standard, its that simple.

Why take the risk with such an expensive piece of kit when you can be sure of the specifications with another product and know the box will naturally wear out after many miles of trouble free service, and most likely outlast the vehicle.

Thanks for posting this assassin (and to everyone else for the ongoing discussion). It was only a chance Googling that led me here before heading off to Halfords for whatever ATF they had on the shelf. I purchased the Millermatic SPIII oil mentioned here in the end from Opie oils. I couldn't find the discount code mentioned and choosing "Pajero Owners Club" prior to checkout didn't make a difference to the price. Still, I'm happy to not be changing the ATF twice!

cheers

Instead of buying online you can ring them and tell them you are a member and you get your discount, you can give your card details over the phone.

To clear things up I have the Mitsubishi Motors Pajero Owners handbook, That came with the car, it states
Under  Maintenance section

ATF DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid should be used for replenishment

My model is a 1999 2800 turbo engine 4M40 Diesel
the handbook also deals with models 3000 3500 2500  GL GLX GLS 3.5 V6-24

So one would assume if you can top up with DEXTRON 2 it is fine to change ATF using it.

Although if you have money to burn putting in the finest smoothest best in the world ATF is probably not going to be bad for it!

My ATF drain plug says DII on it - and the manual does say DII is OK.

You can save a few quid using it if you are willing to take the risk of your gearbox failing - and that will be a BIG bill to replace it.

The general opinion on here is that DII is only suitable as a "get you home" measure - and then change asap to SPIII.

I use Millermatic SPIII WS and I would never risk putting anything inferior into my gearbox - and DII is inferior to SPIII.

I have two manuals - both genuine Mitsubishi.

One says:

The other says:

No mention of DII in the second one.

Sayes Dexron 11 in your lubricat list Pete, I used to use D 111 in my box until I found out to use SP 11/111 box ran fine for years, but never found 3rd gear (rairly)
until SP went in so it must make a differance.

Changing a box is a lot of work and money for the sake of a few quid - so it's SPIII for me. ..... and I change my ATF every year which is a bit OTT but better safe than sorry.
