Thought I'd ask as we'll be towing a caravan when we get Pajero.

Not knowing what year your looking at.......
mk3 paj/shogy it is advised to tow in 4h(iirc over 750kg)
mk2 can tow in 2h or 4h,if a larger caravan then 4h will spread load better across transmission.

Our (current) caravan is 1300kgs all in, it's on the 85% towing limit of our Mondeo.

So this is one of the reasons for a Pajero of Shogun. And no doubt she'll want a bigger 'van in the future.....  Rolling Eyes

Hi guys, back after another week in hospital.
Getting boring now.

So if I have the mk2 2.5td but only 2h 4h and 4l but it says super select on the paperwork,
Can I drive in 4h on the road or not ? Not trying 4l on road.
I did it, and still doing it sometimes.
Even motorways.
St Hellen's to burton on Trent or to work and stuff, even towing a mate recently home.
I have no issues so far with it.
How would I know it's super select or not , apart from the gearstick?
I mean the one next to the auto box selector.
I thought the exceed is super select?

It should be superselect,i've never seen one that isn't  Confused

How many positions has the lever got? If you move it forwards from the 2hi position what lights come on on the dash? If it is only the 4 green lights its got superselect,if it is the 4 green lights and one orange on you probably don't.

Then again if you drive on tarmac with the centre diff locked you'll know about it with the banging, jumping, scraping and other noises that make you clench the seat fabric!

On 2h the rear wheel illumination is on
On 4h all 4 green lights on.
Not tryd since I bought it in 4l.
Just for the test drive around the corner .cant remember the orange was on.

But when using 4h is no orange one on.

If you push it forward again the centre orange light will come on,and to the side and forward again the same lights should stay on,but the truck will be in low box,so lower geared

I have a Mk 2 2.8 Pajero with Super Select and the only time I use 4wd is to drag the caravan (or somebody elses car & caravan) off muddy campsites.
I'd never use 4wd for regular road towing

why not?

the truck is designed to do it, when i have a tow ar fitted i was towing access platforms about, right on the weight limit for the truck, 4h helps spread the load on the transmission and also helps it feel a it more planted..

The towing limit is said to be 3200kg, my t/a caravan weighs 1650kg fully loaded and the weight is distributed properly with 100kg noseweight (the limit for the Alko caravan towing hitch) which means that I can tow the caravan at 60mph down the M5 in 2wd without so much as a wobble  Cool
I have a feeling that using 4wd would decrease the mpg, at around 55mph overdrive engages on the automatic transmission which can give me 28mpg at a steady 60mph with no headwind. I've never had any problems with the transmission but I replace as much atf as possible every 12 months.

i used to tow 3t regular, when your slowing down 4wd makes a hell of a difference, fuel economy.......dunno m8, never checked it as towing anything with a 2 1/2 tonne brick is gonna wreck the economy Wink

Laughing  Laughing  Laughing I'm pretty sure I'd engage 4wd with that weight behind me.
Left to SWMBO our caravan could easily weigh a couple of tonnes but we put her clothes and shoes in the back of the truck  Very Happy
1650kg makes no difference to the way that the truck drives, you wouldn't know it was there

Hello again  Smile

Have been absent for some time, but still more than happy with the Montero.
Great tool it is!!
Nice mix of a car and tractor.  😁
Using it every single day.....

A question I'm having is whether to modify the e-valves to be able to go into 4L WITHOUT having the center diff lock in place.
This would be very handy when towing heavy trailers on hills with rigid surface.
The only thing that keeps me from doing it is whether or not the cardan and front'n'rear diffs are fine with the possible extra torque in case one wheels has less grip than the others...

Curious what you guys are thinking about this idea...
Have a nice evening and stay safe out there!

Greetings from Spain,
Flow

You might find this thread interesting if rather inconclusive:  USE OF LOW RATIO GEARS ON LWB SHOGUN WITH MANUAL GEARBOX

Personally, I think there's a risk of putting too much torque through a single axle.
