Yep. been there myself..

spent 3 weeks on and off trying to get a cb to work... eventualy i got it to work, but could only get out 1/2 a mile, so threw it in the cupboard...

then when i got a tractor on a farm, that was just for me to use, got cb out, put it in tractor and it worked without any problems..

got another for my landy i had at the time, and that worked no probs..

bought new one for my paj. made a bracket to bolt on a frame at the front, works perfect..

never did find out whet the problem was.. they are very tempermental.. and have to be right..

Smidsy, check the inner core of the coax isn't going to earth. You may have earthed the aerial to the bracket or something.  Without looking to check, I think it should be isolated from the bracket by a shaped plastic or fibre washer.

Do you have a magmount? Can you plonk it somewhere else and get a reading ?

It's also possible that you have accidentally nipped the coax breaking the conductor or allowing the shielding to break through the isolator so that there is a connection between that and the conductor of the cable?

Take the PL259 (the antenna plug) out of the back of the CB and set a multimeter to continuity. One probe of the meter to the centre pin of the plug and the other probe to the whip of the antenna. The meter should buzz or indicate zero (depending on setting) This is correct. If there is no connection, no buzz or reading high resistance, then the conductor is broken somewhere. If your antenna is body mounted, i.e drilled through the car or fixed to the body by a bracket, then touch the probe from that you had on the antenna whip, to the car body. There should be no buzz or a high resistance reading. If it does buzz or show zero, then your cable is shot (or plug shorting). If it's a mag mount antenna, take the rubber cup off the bottom of the magnet and touch your probe to this. Again no buzz or meter reading high resistance, anything else the cable is shot or the plug at one end or the other is shorting.
