Would that not be Wine Dan,
Drove home from work and tried to locate the sound, I reclined my seat and lent back and it is deffinately coming from the rear of the truck, it must be the dif or is there anything else that it might be,
I'll change the oil at the weekend. |

Sounds more like Diff, wheel bearing is more constant noise and would be there whether on or off the throttle,
Try an oil change
Is it a LSD?? |

How many miles has it done?
My Shogun has just clicked over 200k, it has a whine from the rear diff above about 60mph. I changed the oil which didn't really make much difference. I have just put it down to wear and age. It isn't horrendous and I can certainly live with it. |

If its more of a drone than a wine it may will be the prop shaft... loose U/Js, happened on mine. Although this may cause a clicking noise and vibration aswell... but always something to check and very easy to do so |

Hi Tom, yes it has got the diff lock button, I also got under it today and looked at the diff filler plug, it is plain with no writing, I was going to jack it up and turn the wheels but I don't think there is any need now.
thanks,
The truck has service history with the main dealer upto 95,000 and then was cherished by the next owner up to about 115,000, unfortunately my mate then bought it and just ran it with out any maintenace at all upto 140,000, just needs some TLC from me,
I'm changing all the oils and filters on Monday |

|

I have a Pajero 2.8 TD, clocked 52K with the same problem. In my case the whining starts during acceleration at 60kmph onwards. This whine dissapears or is rendered inaudible by engine noise at 150kmph. The whine almost dissapears immediately at letting off the accelerator. When it coasts, it doesnt whine. Nor does it whine when the car is put in neutral at higher speed. Comes down to the whine being road speed dependent, rather than engine speed dependent. Therefore, the tyre and the engine are out. even the shaft and UJ is out since the whine comes on only during acceleration.
It was subsequenty established at the workshop that the rear differential was the culprit and the gears therein were the cause of this whine. There was less than perfect setup of the ring and pinion gears which allowed the teeth of both the gears come aggressivel in contact with each other during acceleration at a given speed that in turn caused both gears to wear each other out. In main cases, a crush sleeve failure, ot a bearing failure inside the diff causes this whine. This has a cascading effect on the whole drivetrain and eventally leads to eithe the differential or drivetrain failure. Depending upon the extent of the whine, which may turn to a growl in case of a fast deteriorating diff , we may opt to repair it, or replace it with a new differential.
I have opted to replace it, because I dont want to take the chance of partially replacement of failed gears because as far as I know, nothing beats a factory set differential.
Hope this helps. |
