Hi everybody,
Due to the knocking noise on 4wd during the full throtle, forward or backward direction, we took down the transmission box down.
We found the chain quite elongated. Is there anyone ever tried to put a tensioner in the transfer box? Please check the sketches that shows what is in my mind.
Two holes will be drilled on transfer case and two on the tensioner pad (bronze or polyamide material). The holes shall be threaded.
Although two more hole axis are shown on the chain cover at the sketch and two correspond on the pad, i believe it won't be applicable.
At forward direction there won't be a tension on the side of the chain that we intend to fit a tensioner. Only at backward direction, the material will be exposed to friction and wear.
Brand new chain that i could find in Turkey is almost 1000usd. On the other hand a used transfer box that i could find is around 750usd.
Either purchase solution is too expensive. So i'm trying to find an alternative solution.

I'd like to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

I would of thought more of an adjustable guide/slipper fitted to the inspection plate to stop the slap of the chain, the austin 2.5 taxi engines uses a chain
slipper which may suit what you need, (BMC AUSTIN 2.5 NOT later rover 2.5)

Only a new chain will sort that problem out.

I wouldnt have thought a chain tensioner will last very long because when you reverse the tight side of the chain swaps and will be rubbing directly on the tensioner.

As Richie said renewing the chain is best idea, specially now its exposed.

p.s.

its not only when reverse is selected, engine braking when driving will tighten the other side of the chain too, so all your hard work may well be short lived....

Hi,
davembp; because i live in Turkey, i don't have a chance to check that application on a bmc austin taxi.
richie; as i've mentioned earlier, the new chain is too expensive.
Mark3; i've already considered the backward direction but the percentage of the usage at that direction made me ignore that. To be honest i've never thought about engine brake. You're right.
Best and cheapest solution seems to find a used transfer box.

Thanks guys for your time and kind answers.

You can not fit any tensioner in this, as Mark says, unlike the timing chain, which only goes one way, this chain goes both ways, so, new is your only possible fix, apart from looking if you can take one link out of the one you have, certainly looks slack enough in picture !!!

But, and short cut fix, will be a waste of time.

Now you have it stipped down that much would it not be simpler to fit a new chain?

Does everthing just slide off the shafts?

Annoyingly you can pick up a good used gearbox and transfer box for around £200 in the UK. But I guess shipping even just the transfer box to Turkey would cost a lot.
