|
|
a few folks have asked for pics of mine so here they are, it isn't a full write up of how to do it as i just supervised my 15 yr old daughter doing mine so it's real easy
right, steerings been a bit off lately so after the arb bushes and doing the pitman arm it was still fighting over bumps at speed, after checking everything i thought *beep* it, the steering dampers 16 yrs old and never been looked at. after a quick mip up to the lads at west coast near southport this morning i came home with this little baby...
when ya go to change this part, make sure the trucks up on ramps, it's easier to work under and when (not if) the heavens open you will have somewhere to hide
nice easy job this one, whip the rear belly pan off, no need to take the front one off, it sit happily there out of the way, all the pics are taken from under the truck looking to the front so i was keeping my legs dry, bit cramped with 2 of under there
when you look up under the truck you will see the track rod running across with the damper bolted on a u bracket on the rod and on the chassis at the other end
17mm socket on a ratchet, whip the old one off and fit the new one, the ironman kit has different fittings in a bag for diferent applications, i binned em so no pics as they can't be used on the shogun or pajero if your retrofitting.
the bolts that hold the damper in place are plain shank so there's no inserts in the bushes on the new damper.
take loads of pics
just for reference the original damper on mine was an original mitsi unit part no :-MA308237 KE24
the eye bushes are marked up 254-16-18 sc 359 and theres 4 of them, they look like the bottom shock absorber bushes but i have none here to compare them with...
hope this helps someone. |

yep, just tightened everything back up m8, wasn't to bad before but i knew the damper was 16 yrs old so needed doing.
i could move the old damper no problem, it was smooth but very weak, the new one is stiff as a corpse
needs a touch more effort on the wheel which i prefer to having a wheel you can spin with one finger. |

| Think mine needs doing its a bit erratic over bumps !!! noticed there's no rod cover on the new one and you have fitted it the other way around obviously doesn't matter which way it fits |

procomp used to do the full kit for retrofitting the kit, on most mk2's the mount is there on the chassis for one end of the damper, might be worth hunting down a track rod with the bracket fitted and use that instead of trying to find a kit plenty of folks breaking them lately.
mike, i couldn't see any difference with the way it was fitted and the heavens had opened (our robs was getting wet ) it will go either way. i don't know how long it's gonna last without the shroud over but the original one i took off had a layer of dust on it and nothing else so it must be the cleanest part of me truck |

| Right spoke to llama and they can make one, mine has bracket, just nothing on rod which is easy enough.Just need U bracket. He said he will make one up,just need size for bolt .£37 for damper and £50 for damper and bracket or if need both brackets (2 U brackets,1 bigger to attach to say an axle) then £70. So looking around £50 ish.Not 100% but get impression most steering dampers will have same stroke so looking like the one for a zook maybe.Soon as rain stops will mark rod and measure lock to lock and see what length required. |

original damper,
closed length on eye centres= 360mm
extended length on eye centres=532mm
damper diameter=39mm
eye width(inc bushes)=37mm
fitting pin,
shank=15.7mm diameterx32.5mm
thread=11mm diameter???could be imperial but i aint got me gauges with me x 19mm long.
pic of the kit stud
the one on the left is the one i have measured, on the original off the car it is basically a bolt so lose the threaded unshanked section and it has a bolt head.
hope it helps |
