Having read about the problems of timing chains / tensioners, on the 3.2 Di-d, can anyone tell me whether it's a pig of a job to replace the whole thing, or is it straightforward? It's a 2001 Paj Exceed with 73,000 miles warranted!

What I'm unsure of, is to know whether it would be best to have the full timing chain kit done as a replacement, or just replace the upper tensioner?

Is it wise to buy from Millners, or would it be safer to go to main dealer for the parts?

Thanks in advance for any help given!

Regards,

MC

Mits say that the chain doesn't need replaced unless it's been damaged. Most folk only change the top tensioner & the adjuster. I would buy the part from Mits, it's an update part & only costs £27 for the tensioner.

Easy job to do, so I have been told. Think Mits is about £100 to change it all in?

Davie5316,

Thanks for the info...appreciated!
No longer a dilemma now that you've told me that. Smile

Will be ordering tensioner from main dealer and they deliver straight to my door as soon as parts are in stock.

Regards,

MC

geodrome,

Thanks also for your help!

Is that the only part I need to replace? Smile

Remove rocker box / cam cover and a couple of bolts...looks fairly straightforward,
but could save a hell of a lot of damage?

MC

That's all i changed. Tensioner could be worth doing too.
It's an easy job. Just don't over tighten the bolts, the alloy head is quite soft.

geodrome,

Forgive my ignorance but which bit is the actual tensioner and does it have to be 'set-up' correctly
to get the chain to it's correct tension?

Thanks again.

mick1969,

Thanks,

Sounds easy enough but I did read somewhere that the tensioner needs to be "Set-up", to correct the chain tension!

Is that the tensioner, atop of the orange coloured plastic bit?

I'll get it done this week hopefully!

Regards,

MC

No, that's not the tensioner, that is just a guide.  The tensioner is half way down on the right.

No, that's not the tensioner, that is just a guide.  The tensioner is half way down on the right.

This is the tensioner, it is similar to the 2.8, when fitting you push the piston back and use the clip to lock it. When fitted the lock undos setting the tension.

DI-Dick,

Thanks for your input, once more the help on here is greatly appreciated!

Were you referring to the part that's again coloured orange but low down on the right side, as viewed?

Regards,

MC
