Lots of good lanes in the Peaks which isn't far away, otherwise there are quite a few out towards Goole or down towards Worksop, you will need to get some OS maps and then check on the internet which ones are open. |

Yep - start with OS maps. Look for BOATs or permitted access routes (pink crosses or dots), then check with websites such as Trailwise or if the local council has a rights of way map online. Ideally check with the council's rights of way officer (polite email with OS grid references of the start and end of lanes you want to check on often gets a good reply) - definitely do this for any lanes that are permitted access or don't look well used. Driving on a road subject to a TRO or being private property can get you into a lot of trouble, and makes it harder to keep the legitimate ones open.
As Tom said - Peak District isn't far, but there's very little directly north of Doncaster. My nearest area with enough to make a decent day out is East Yorkshire, around Driffield.
And obviously - never go out on your own, as recovery companies won't recover you from anything that they don't consider to be 'reasonably accessible' for their vans . Minimum of two vehicles, maximum of four (especially in sensitive areas like the Peak District). |
