Hi all,

I have just begun looking into this , my pajero is a 2002 3.0 liter petro GLS imported from Dubai to the UK and now in france where i recently bought it. I have enquired with Mitsubishi UK about a CoC but they said it had to come from country of origin as it wasn't an official import.

anyone had any experience with an original dubai car.....just wondering if best to try via Mitsubishi france or UAE ?

appreciate any comments. VIN starts with a J.

thanks

alan

Hi,

I think if you're in France you'll have to follow the same process as all of us have done - i.e deal with Mitsubishi France, not UAE . Put your feet up, get a glass of wine, or a cup of tea, and read through this guide to registering in France here: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=87328

I think the fact that the car was first registered in Dubai will mean that it will be treated pretty much exactly as a Japanese grey import into UK - which I guess it was.. Confused i.e. you will only get partial conformity and will have to go through the inspection at the DREAL.  I will watch this topic ( thanks Richie  Laughing  ) and help out if I can with any questions.

I see you bought the car in France - does that mean it was owned by other Brits who'd been scared off by the process ? I've read loads of things on other forums where people say it's inpossible and  can't be done, or it's not worth the bother and heartache - but I can confirm- OK it's a bit of a bother, but when you see the price you'd have to pay for a similar car  in  France, it's well worth the effort,  Very Happy .

Bonne chance, a bientot !

thank you , i'm not sure if the previous brits were scared off or just didn't get round to it.
the first step was the CT and it failed on tyres and emissions but those were easily rectified....I can get a CT without CoC (or partial) but cannot register it without both.

it was a bit of a bargain , probably half the price of a similar model here in france , in fact I also bought another RHD pajero 1996 a couple of years ago , with immaculate bodywork for 750 euros ! and gave it to my father to drive back to the UK ...so there may be a UK plated pajero graveyard to be explored in this region!
best rgds

There seem to be loads of Brits driving around for years on UK plates which is completely illegal. Some friends of ours have lived near Saumur for 5 years and OK they bought a French reg 4x4 but were quite insistent that they had no need to register their UK caravan having chatted to other 'experts' -  Brits  Rolling Eyes
Anyway - I sent them some email links to the regulations, and now - finally - they have gone through the process and are legal on the road. Rolling Eyes  Some French insurers seem quite happy to take the money year after year without insisting that the vehicle gets registered...it's all fine- until you have an accident.. Wink

Sorry, that's wrong,  Rolling Eyes  and furthermore the car has to be registered in France to be legal. I don't see the relevance of whether the car is  only going to be driven in France or not - in the event of an accident you would be in BIG trouble and I doubt the insurers would pay out.

Read here from a specialist website:

"Importing a car from the UK and registering it in France
If you decide that you want to bring your car with you to France, the situation becomes a little more complicated. It is currently possible, even if you are a French resident, to keep your UK driving licence and UK plates, for a short time at least, but you will have to change to French plates and a French licence eventually. Your UK driving licence is valid in France until it expires, while you are allowed to keep UK plates for up to six months if you are a non-resident of France, and up to one month for French residents. The time allowed for French residents can be extended up to a maximum of three months should a vehicle need to be approved via the DRIRE. ( which it most probably will ) In the past these time limits have not seemed to have been strictly adhered to, but insurance laws are now tightening and this should no longer be the case. Should you be at all uncertain, I would suggest you take current local advice about registering a car, from your Mairie in the first instance, and then from the prefecture or capital town of your department."

It's a non EU grey import, so amdowns won't get a COC from anywhere but Mitsubishi France, and then it won't be a full certificate of conformity, but a partial one. On the plus side he shouldn't have to pay for it, but he will have to pay for the DREAL inspection - about 90 euros. The car was originally registered in a non EU country, so the French will have to check that it conforms to EU regs in place at the time.

Out of interest Alan, if you do pick this up. Is your car RHD ? I picked this interesting bit of info up : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080327141638AAnial5
The plot thickens..  It sounds like a japanese import  if the VIN begins with J anyway. Maybe it got bounced via Dubai before coming to UK, alternatively I don't know when they started refusing to allow RHD cars on the road in UAE .. maybe yours was there before the ban?

Happy New Year BTW  Very Happy

Watch out that a Dubai spec petrol vehicle may well have no catalytic converter - and there's no way on earth you'll get that through the French requirements. If it's got one, then it may well be as Daisy says a Japanese model that was imported to Dubai and it should be the same process as registering a Japanese import that came through the UK.
