can I just do a sanity check here folks... If I go get some mazola or similar and mix it with derv , say 40lt derv to 10lt oil it will actually run okay? Would I need to add something to help lubricate the engine as there will not be any additive in the cooking oil. Would a 4:1 mix mean no heating issues as the mix would be fairly weak.

Playing it that safe i'd be saving near on £6.50 per fill up, say 75 fills per year - thats the thick end of £500, less any required additives!

Something to keep me occupied over the weekend I htink...

Box arrived this morning, Very Happy about 6" deep, 2' long and 18" wide. Crammed FULL of parts. Replaces ALL of the hoses in the fuel system, from the tank forwards, with larger diameter hose. Includes 2nd filter, electric filter heater, water/fuel heat exchanger + plumbing, exchange fuel injectors, longer glow-plugs, new glo-plug relay + all wiring, a whole host of connectors, jubilee clips, mounting brackets, hand operated fuel priming pump. Oh, and there's some instructions too.

Look like a comprehensive replacement for most parts of the fuel system.

The only bit that looks like I might need some assistance is where it says the fuel injection pressure needs to be raised by 5 bar. I don't really want to start fidling with the injector pump without the right tools and knowledge. (some might say its a bit late for such cowardice)

More news as the bits get fitted, once I've figures out where to put them. Confused Anyone in the surrey area who wants to join in the diesel engine version of the Krypton Factor is welcome to bring their spanners and get grubby too.

R's
Dale.

Just checked the price of VO in Sainsbury at Lunchtime. Their cheapest was 54p/Litre.

Not much of a saving there once you've added the tax.

But who cares what the price of SVO is in sainsbury's when you have a whole pile of new bits and pieces to play with and a bunch of experiments to perform. See your signature for a good explanation....

All the best,
Dale.

Yep, it works Very Happy. In summer up to 50% is fine (generally 20% otherwise). You don't need a heater or any other additives. Try Lidl or Aldi for cheaper fresh VO Wink.

i shall be digging up the back garden this week end and planting my winter crops of maze and rape.

once harvested i shall begin the process of extracting the oil and refining it.

I wonder what will give the best yeild from a 60X75 ft garden.

I know that this is not for a Pajero, but it is relevant to this thread.

Someone with a surf has had the same idea. Its well worth the read.

PostPosted: Mon Oct 04, 2004 14:17    Post subject: Passat now running happily on straight 100% veg oil Reply with quote

Well, it took a while. holidays and summer sun got in the way. Had to go sailing instead of engineering. Anyway, final result of the veggie engine conversion is that it runs as sweet as a nut. Noticeably quieter and more powerful. MPG is slightly better than diesel too. Starts a bit lumpy on colder mornings, but haven't had frost yet. Now just have to fill in the bloomin governments fuel duty form.

Owing to other problems found when the head was taken off, the following were also renewed which probably makes it go better too.. cylinder head incl cam etc, recon turbo charger, new clutch and release bearing, all new oil seals and gaskets. Oh.. and painted the engine red, just because it was out... matches the bodywork now.

Also added a kenlow pre-heat kit so that the engine is warm and the car defrosted before we need to try to start it in the winter.

All in all, it is working far better than i thought it would. Exhaust fumes mean that anyone who knows us (and what we've done) knows exactly where we've been for a while afterwards! Anyone for chips?

Now to start work on the Pajero.
