the day before you plan a drain and refill of coolant in your rad get a calgon tablet(used for dishwashers and washing machines to remove limescale)crush it and add to the coolant when the engine is at half normal running temp to allow it to dissolve and not scald you and run for the day.
when you drain the coolant next day the sludge that comes out is unbelievable
give the rad a good flush after to remove any left behind
after refill the engine runs cooler and the cab heating much improved
ive done it o the dumper and excavator too and it works a treat
regards,andy

if you leave it in overnight, run the engine for 2 mins from cold just long enough to get the water flowing again.

Good plan but will all the seals and gaskets etc be ok and not get munched away?

My system was/is full of *beep* when I first got Paj, spent about 3-4 hours of filling running around the block then draining to get just clearish water, this idea could of saved loads of pain!

the damage to seals/internals had crossed my mind prior to doing this and thought
washing machines/dishwashers have similar set up to cars cooling system
metal parts,rubber hoses,water pumps,plastic pipes etc...
they both operate to temps of 90+deg c
i can only say that the times that i have done this(5) has had no bad effect to seals etc and made the coolant stay so much cleaner for longer afterwards and better cooling and interior heating.i can only say how it went for me.
if you decide to do it,please let me know how i went,
regards,andy

How did you get on Matt ?

Did my cambelt etc today and the rad is full of crud, but the weather didnt allow for a full flush, tried some rad flush but it didnt do anything.

Was going to drop some calgon in tomorrow and drain it on monday.

thoughts ?

the rad is to far gone m8, either get it re cored or replace it.
lay it on it's back and fill the rad with a kettle full of boiling water. feel the matrix. any cold spots and the rad is knackered. all the flushing in the world won't shift solid tubes, it can't dissolve the sludge enough to make any difference.

Excellent stuff for flushing. I use it all the time and use in the proportions 1.5 times stronger than in central heating and run the car for 2-3 days, say 100 miles, without a stat and it'll shift the scale and crud. It doesn't do any harm at all - think central heating, aluminium rads, copper pipes,  fibre and rubbers gaskets, pumps and pump seals etc. Make sure you flush out thoroughly afterwards though and also back flush the system. Don't forget to put the stat back before you refill with coolant antifreeze/inhibitor.
