Hey people. I was just wondering was Green Laning is actually ?? I just read the section of the Green Lane in the forum and checked it out on the internet. The google provided me the non-profit company that provides free education and stuff like that. But what is it to do with the car events in here ? The threads also confuses me.... Help out please !!! |

In the UK (more particularly Wales, England and to some extent Ireland, but not Scotland) there are various unsurfaced roads that are public rights of way. These are 'green lanes' - I guess 'tracks' might be another name, but as they're often overgrown with grass and other vegetation they're known as 'green lanes'. Technically they're shown on the Ordnance Survey maps as 'byway open to all traffic' or 'other public access road'.
As we don't have that many places you can drive an offroad vehicle legally, green lanes are as close some of us are going to get to proper off road driving as experienced in other, less crowded countries.
It ranges from what are well travelled farm access roads which are easy to drive on to routes that were used by horse and cart a thousand years ago that have retained their legal status as a road, despite now consisting of big rocks or deep mud that require big tyres and maybe winching capability. So you get people who want a nice drive in the countryside for views you'd often only get by walking, to much more technical routes requiring a lot of skill (and not worrying about a bit of damage to the truck!)
It's probably a bit of peculiarly British thing, as larger countries either have no public right of way on unsurfaced tracks, or have so many that there's loads of places to drive that require the abilities of a decent 4x4 vehicle... |
