Hi I've for a 3.2did swb shogun 52 plate! And the temp guage goes straight into the red from cold, fitted a new sensor and no change, removed the wire on the sensor and the guage reads around quarter to half!

Any ideas??

Thanks

Bad earth.
Have you put a multimeter on plug to sensor to what voltage is both sides.

Hi, no I havnt checked the voltage to the sensor, I will check it shortly and get back to you! Does the temp sensor wire go direct to the dash guage or through the ecu?

Ecu, sometimes it has just needs a new earth strap on engine.
Or ecu might need a pin re earthed.
Also if another sensor is bad it sends power up the wire, your power will supply other sensors.
Get your meter out and tell me power on both pins in plug.
I did just have a look on the autodata cd but no info for pins on ecu if diesel.
I dont think it will be a problem as I can look on my break out box, ive never done a 3.2 with pump only common rail so dont know if I have a card for break out box.
It comes with so many and rest you buy later.

My temp sensor only has one wire going to it and with the engine started the voltage between the sensor wire and earth is 4.99volts....!

Ok this goes straight to gauge then, im surprised as my paj 2.8 edc with sim pump to you is 2 wire.
Normal ect sensor.
Well put wire to block, does guage go straight to top.
If yes it can only be that sensor, you must test the resistance, I dont know if I can find them, but if the sensor is good it tells me wire rubbed through on engine somewhere or poss guage.

Yes when I earth the wire the guage goes straight into the red, fitted a new sensor yesterday! The old sensor had a resistance of 433ohms and the new one 520ohms with the difference is resistance I thought I had cured it! I thought wrong!

Just to clarify, you suggest I put the wire on the sensor and then try and get a voltage reading with it plugged in??

Yes plug it on, put probe down bk of plug, turn key on, tell me what guage is at and voltage, it works by resistance.
Guage has power supply, your sensor is earth, the hotter it gets then there be no resistance,  same as you touching metal with wire.
Coil on guage at full power resulting in needle hi.
I think your sensor is wrong and previous was glitching.

The old sensor had a copper terminal with a pin down the middle surrounded by black insulation to stop it touching the outer case of the sensor

The new one was the same but green! I know the colours can sometimes vary in different models but with sensor does the same thing!

With it been single wire and going straight to the guage could I put another wire in and try that?

Guage shows roughly a 1-3rd up and voltage is 4v!  And as soon as I go down the road it will go into the red, I fitted a new water pump, thermostat and temp sensor yesterday just for piece of mind and it still does the same! I know it definatly isn't over heating!

Dude im sure its wrong sensor.
The ohms must be same or gauge be in wrong place.
Are you thinking the engine has problems.
Let it cool down, remove rad cap and start, is it bubbling.
If not is your viscous fan working.
But check that sensor 1st before going to deep.
