hello everyone
I am interested in installing a second fuel system that can operate independently from the existing one which has the ability to be switched on/off at my choosing via a switch somewhere on the dash.
has anyone done this before?
thanks Daryl

Yes, done many of them but not on Shoggys.
You need a solenoid change over valve with two inlets and one outlet, but you also need a tank return change over valve near or at the filter housing so if you are running road diesel in one tank this gets returned to this tank, and red diesel in another tank for off road use only, this only gets returned to this tank, otherwise you will get all the returned diesel from both tanks going back to the main tank and mixing it. |

It's a very common thing to do when running vegetable oil too - do a search for 'SVO twin tank' on Google for example.
You can buy kits the include the valves, pipework and even fancy control units to control the purge during switchover automatically, and switching based on engine temperature (as 100% veg oil isn't great when cold). |

Illegal according to the IR:
4.3 Can I store rebated oil in auxiliary (belly) tanks on a vehicle or trailer?
Yes, but only in fuel tanks not capable of connection to the engine used to propel the vehicle (unless it is an excepted vehicle). The standard running tank(s), whether connected or disconnected, must contain only fully duty paid fuel. Rebated gas oil must not be taken into the standard running tanks or auxiliary tanks fitted to vehicles or trailers except where these tanks are solely and permanently connected to the auxiliary machinery (for example, refrigeration motors). All other tanks on a vehicle, trailer or bulk carrier whether directly connected to the propelling engine or not, will be considered to be part of the road fuel system. Dual fuel systems are not permitted, even where they can connect to a power take off to switch the tanks. |

No it isn't as it is circumstance dependent and I led the team on this several years ago and IR made provisions rather than face a costly judicial review or legal action.
The basis of this action was simple, we had a fleet of vehicles travelling round a county, they travelled to site on the road and then worked on site al day, then travelled back to their depot at night. IR tried to change the rules which stated that a vehicle could travel on road running red diesel if it predominantly worked off road, much the same as agricultural vehicles, and for vehicles such as cranes, road sweepers, and many others; their main function was to operate/work off road and they only travelled to sites on the roads to their place of work.
With a change of rules it meant the vehicles had to have twin tanks fitted, a small tax paid diesel tank for travelling on road to site, then the normal tank for tax free/reduced duty diesel (red) for working on all day. |

The answer from the IR clearly stated 'unless an excepted vehicle'. There is no way a Pajero taxed as PLG would come under excepted, and nor could an excepted vehicle be used for PLG use. |

Of course if your second tank has a road legal fuel in it (eg diesel, biodiesel, SVO etc), then it's fine as the duty has been paid (or is exempt from duty, eg less than 2500 litres a year of SVO).
daryly8837 - you didn't say what you were planning on putting in it? |

Hi to all any advice how to manage that on Pajero mk 3 LWB?? I was thinking about putting 2 nd tank in place where normally is 3rd row of seat in the boot area and connect bottom of 2nd tank with top of main 1 with pipe so fuel will go to main tank under gravity/weigh itself plus connect fuel filling main pipe to boot 2nd tank..but at this point I dont know if it will be legal/safe to do that...If anyone have any advice on that please comment |
