1995' SWB Pajero Intercooler 2.8 (auto)

Hello Everyone.

This is my first post, although i spent a lot of time reading in here, about many issues.
Very usefull was the Guide to buy a Pajero, since i was looking for an Intercooler Turbo one, and got it finally one week ago.

Fixing the mirror switch, grasing the nipples, flushing the radiator, were some of the things i used...
Intercooler vleaning was also in my list...

BUT...something unexpected cam up...  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad
I am afraid that maybe i did a bad buy...

The problem appeared one more time, but said to my self maybe was nothing to worry about
Today, while driving in high way, with O/D not in Off, Gears would not go to 4th...and it was like neutral after 3rd gear..
Tried to push O/D button, and 3rd gear engaged

Then same thing, i tried go to 4th gear by pressing the O/D, rpms were raising, but no gear in the gear box... it was like i put the gear stick in neutral...

Anyone had this problem, or heart again? I did little search here, didnt find something similar...
Maybe actual gearbox fail? maybe somthing with elecronics?
Anyway..somthing that can be fixed "easily"

Sorry for writing my first post for asking help..but my experiences with mechanical are limited...
And now i worry...that maybe i need new gearbox, that will take me out of my budget...

I also have the Super select light flashing, but since 4wd is working normal, i doulbe checked also with my mechanic and said nothing to worry about...
I tried some connections with connector cleaner in that, i couldn not reach some others..

Now this gear box is my main issue..and must figure out what is going on...
I like my Pajero, and want it be fixed and be in great condition..

Waiting for some advice since i saw many advanced knowledge!

(i previously owned an MK1 1991 2.5 Pajero, and sold to upgrade to this...i hope i do not regret Sad)

Cheers again!

I'm really not an expert, and I hope one comes along soon to give you a definitive answer, but to me it sounds like the overdrive clutch pack is slipping.

I've got a copy of the V4AW3 gearbox workshop manual if it would be useful to you as a guide. PM me with your email address and I will send it to you.

It's worth you checking the level/condition of the ATF in the gearbox, but I reckon you'd have other symptoms too if it was that low/bad.

Sorry I can't be more positive, but I fear it's a gearbox overhaul. I hope I am proved wrong!

Actually I just discovered the kickdown function is not working...
Or at least not normally..
So maybe this is something can be fixed by adjusting the throttle cable mayve??
Thanks for the input

Maybe! There's plenty on here about kickdown cable adjustment.  I'd be surprised if a maladjustment would give the effect of disengaging overdrive though. But I hope you're right!  Very Happy

Go for the easy and cheaper options first. Check your atf, should be cherry red and smell sweet, not brown and smelling burnt and....be at the right level too. To much can be just as bad as too little.

The level of the gearbox fluid is ok, and the seller assured me ( Confused ) he changed it not long time ago..
Anyway I will take tha car to be checked also about kickdown because I dont have the knowledge to deal myself..
He must also see the flasjing super select front wheel lights..
I tried with the connector cleaner myself..but could reach only 2 connectors

Fixing of the mirror switch guide though, was successful,  although I had to bypass one broken copper line by bupassing with wire because was too much damage on it

Simon thanks for the manual you offered to send..still not able send pms (newbie)
I also ordered a dvd from internet as service manual..at least to identify some parts of the car..

Thanks man!! I will check it
I just confirmed that kick down is not working correct, but 3rd gear is engaged only with o/d button when I need extra power..
I hope is not two different issues, this and the other with not changing to 4th gear (which by the way happened only 2 times)

Wish to all nice sunny day (Cyprus style)

I've sent you a PM with the link. I hope it covers what you are looking for.  If not get back to me as I've accumulated a fair amount of stuff that might be useful.

Appreciated. I'm thinking an electrical issue as its had a second hand box in it and the garage said they had to chop and rewire the control loom so, just a switch or something i'm thinking thumbright
