Good morning.
I am coming up with a new issue.
I noticed this before, but since i have the car now (my father had for some days), and after mechanic supposed to deal with the kick-down problem, i have new findings...
The mechanic said he adjust as good as possible , but i saw no result!
The cases : (Auto 2.8 1995)
1.Driving in high way with 60mph, 2500 rpm
Pushing O/D button, car goes in 3rd gear -->
Revs raise by 1000 (around 3500) -->OK
2.Driving in high way with 60mph, 2500 rpm
Pushing the pedal to the floor (to kick down)-->
Revs drop around 250-300, and i feel like the car gets in higher gear! Like 5th gear is engaging (i know there isnt 5th gear!)
The subject is, i cannot succeed to drop gear using kick down function...NEVER
Having also problems with low speeds accelaration (i have to step long distance to the pedal to get me moving), and reading tons of stuf in here, maybe the accelaration cable needs adjestment, so that kick-down cable can be adjusted also??
What do you think about this behaviour?

P.S. Oils, filters, all changed.
I am not able to fix my slef, and will take to a new mechanic to see, but just want to identify the issue.
I will keep inform this topic for the final findings after solving the problem. |

The 'extra gear' you're feeling is the torque converter locking up - this is totally normal.
The lack of kickdown though is a separate issue. Try shortening the cable by 5mm and road testing. There's only one from the fuel pump to the gearbox - some people call it a 'kickdown cable', others 'accelerator position cable' and others 'transmission control cable'. Mitsubishi tend to favour the latter. On the gearbox on the 2.5 diesel this is the only indication the gearbox has of what the accelerator pedal is doing, so it's critical that it's right. This is because the V4AW2 gearbox on those has no electronics. On the 2.8 the electronic TPS/LPS sensor does this job, and so the cable is only really used as an indication off full pedal application - ie demanding kickdown. The V4AW3 gearbox on the 2.8 has lots of electronics, hence the Hold and Power modes and reliance on various sensors - which is why it doesn't work properly if the rev counter or speedo aren't working properly. |

I allready went trhough the topics about adjuting the "kick down cable"
But since my mechanic said he could not adjust further...that made me worry...and wanted get your feedback on this...
So the revs going down instead of up is something normal..not gearbox problem...(because this is my fear..!)
Tomorrow i am getting the truck to a new guy here, to check specificly the kick down issue...and i will see..
Checking the accelaration cable under the intercooler..its seems to me very loose...and i have the feeling tha also pedal is not responding to get the car start moving... i need to press down hard...
I hope is something fixable and only adjustment is needed...will see

Have you adjusted the throttle cable correctly - then adjust the kickdown cable as in the last link I sent you.
I found this on another thread:

The revs going down is normal - the torque converter is just locking up like it is supposed to do - as mentioned earlier by rich r. |

Thanks guys.
Since lack of knowledge in this things (although i am dieing to learn!!) i dont want to touch anything..maybe will make worst.
I try many things, but up to where i feel i cannot harnm anything....
But i will pass the information to my mechanich (together with the picture showing the 34-35mm on kickdown adjustment)
to help him solve the problem..
Not being a specialist in these trucks..someone can do strange things and not correct.. |

The kick down cable is the one with black boot, and throttle with red?

It was matter of adjestment finally..
Although i printed the paper with the 34-35mm diagram, the mechanch said should go much more than that to have result..
Now i think is normal..i have to test it uphills also, but at least i have drop of gear when i step on the pedal, something i never saw up to now with this truck...
Hope that case is closed for this...
let's go for the next task

Yes - the 35mm distance is for a new cable. The do tend to stretch slightly over time, but it's not a bad point to start from. Hence why I suggested you shorten it by 5mm and test drive, then adjust a bit more or less if necessary.
Hopefully that's all there was to it |

I never had a turbo car again...
I think the boost i feel when i press the pedal to the floor (increase of about 500rpms) its the turbo engaging....
Because although i feel that when i need the extra boost and "kick down" te accelaration pedal, if then i press the O/D button, i have increase of 1000 more rpms, and definetely 3rd gear is engaged.
I cannot still feel that i can engage 3rd gear with the accelaration pedal...
I can just add some boost (+500 rpms) without gear change i think...... |
