Im considering fitting a small tank for diesel on my Lwb pajero. I don't want to loose space fitting it in the boot, so I was wondering where others fit them?

That's a good one!

If you don't want it inside then it would have to go underneath. I spent weeks under mine last summer doing the rust and there didn't seem to be anywhere that you could fit a useful sized tank. Also, a tank underneath would likely get damaged off road.

Why do you want an extra tank - is it to increase your range? - If so then Jerry cans work well, and you can take them out if you are not going far.

I've removed the rear most seats to make room for an extra tank. I'd only used them twice in 5 years so wasn't that bothered. They got in the way more often than that.

One option someone suggested (if yours is a LWB) is to fit the slightly smaller SWB tank instead of the original and then you can probably fit a smaller tank next to it for the diesel. That was a bit too involved for my liking, but could be good if you really want to fit one underneath.

Guys I seen something really good.
guy had 2 tanks.
1 was for red other was for white.
he said he never uses white lol and will only use if pulled up.
another good 1 I see, probably the best 1.
guy took his filler neck off.
welded a plate on end of scaffolding tube, ran tube over top of tank.
put a filler hole for main tank inside.
ran on red and put white diesel in filler neck.
how clever is that.

My dad did a similar thing for trout fishing - not on the car and not for diesel though.

The place he fished had a limit to the number of fish you could take home so he had a false bottom in his fishing basket.

Maggots were also banned so he had a bait tin with a lid at each end and a partition half way down.

Worms in the top and maggots in the bottom!

That was 50 years ago though! - I bloody hated fishing but was expected to go with him for some reason.


Doesn't using red diesel end up covering the engine and show up if you lift the bonnet? - never used it but my dad always said it was easy to see an engine that had been run on it - he was maybe wrong, he often was!

Thats all a myth.
you are actually allowed to run 20% on it.
also if your a farm you can run on red and pay the duty on the forms you fill in.
yeah right it will be I used 1 tank this month lol.

I'm hoping to buy a narrow boat in the next couple of years - I assume they run on red diesel so I will hopefully have a supply of it then.

No I was blown away with this.
I went to uksa in isle of wight.
all people go there to do sailing, famous etc.
I went there and was into the water purification.
Ie it has filters of wax etc, high pressure rams water through, only h20 can get through.
does taste nasty as were all use to tap water, full of chlorine.
Any way a new law came in.
boats are now to be on white.
its stupid.
ships still use heavy oil but the equipment costs thousands.
just the trace wire to go round is mega bucks.

To go round pipes.
I assume this only applys if your so many miles in international waters.
ie so many miles away then poss red be ok, I cant remember was time some back.
I know people still run on red as they say who can police this.

Weird - I thought that red diesel had less duty on it because you weren't allowed to use it on roads.

The duty on white was to help repair the roads (supposedly) - boats are all "off road" so the bloody government shouldn't charge as much in duty.

The government just keep taking and taking!

I didnt think the duty went to roads.
I thought just government.
I said the same, this is crazy as a boat never touches the roads.

Government does what it wants with the money but I think if we spend it on fuel then perhaps filling a few potholes wouldn't be too much to ask from them.

I just remembered,  theres a way round this, well no.
if you run on white your fine in a boat etc.
but if at port, you buy diesel it comes as red.
theres a leisure duty on it.
its not quite as bad as white but its well over a £1 a litre.
or if you put red in you must declare the duty.
but get this, I know if you goto Belgium with this diesel your now ilegal again.
its so crazy.

Running a narrow boat on white wouldn't break the bank account anyway - from what I've seen most of them have piddly little one or two cylinder engines.

Don't need much power to go at 4 mph  Very Happy
