Does anyone know how the instrument pod on the dash is held in place or removed; the binnacle that holds the clock and compass ans stuff.

Unless your car came with one then there is no point in adding one because the binnacle comes with a harness for which there is no plug on cars that never had the binnacle.

I bought one off a breaker because I liked the look but it is completely useless unless plugged in. I have though about running some wires to the harness to get the clock to work but not knowing the wiring convention I could damage it. There is a also a temperature monitor but my car never came with the temperature probe.

I have the Russian version of the service manual and there is no mention of the binnacle by way of diagrams.

Here are photos of the binnacle in situ and with it out.

Because the car is not one that had the binnacle then there are no fixing points for it. Besides, the breaker ripped it out of the original car so the screw holes are broken. It slots in okay and doesn't jump around when I am driving. It's no more than a non-functioning ornament.

In answer to the original poster try removing the entire fascia covering all the air con controls etc. and that might give you access under the binnacle.
