You can use squashed bananas if you want - but anything other than the recommended - you take the risk!

Just to clarify the original debate of this thread.

I know I have to use LSD oil but after a blank expression from every motor shop I went in and being shown several times that the ref books they have recomend GL-5 I was trying to find if it was the same thing, as only GL-4 would have been available when the paj was built and had LSD oil now become known as the higher spec GL-5 or was it a fob off as their suppliers don't stock it.

It seems it was a fob off and standard GL-5 is only fit for topping up if LSD not available. But it seems LSD is a GL5 based lube with extra extreme pressure additives to cope with the shock loading not present in standard diffs. So using the GL-5 would mean your paj runs ok on the road and even off but every time the diff locks it will do a little damage.

I think this thread has actually come to a conclusion which all the others I have read seemed to fail to do. And maybe simon would put in the faq section???? Or am I just over impressed with myself Embarassed

So the next question........ Can I stick all this darned GL-5 in my front diff and transfer box?

Hi Suvvey.
No.
I think I'm right in saying that you can't put the GL5 in your TRANSFER BOX. You need a GL4 for this. It's quite a bit thicker than the GL5 and smells quite strong too. I used Millersoils GL4 in mine.
Sorry, to complicate things further. Confused
Cheers. ...Sgtbash...

Had a feeling I couldn't.
Shame though, thought the thinner stuff would help prevent it sticking and being a bum to get to lock. I know GL-5 is thinner but doesn't the fully synth bit mean it still offers the same protection? Don't forget it was not available when mitsi wrote the spec sheets.

Wot about front diff?

Hi.
I read somewhere that the GL5 has a high sulphur content and that this would cause damage to the gears.
Dunno if thats the reason, but the Transfer box looked expensive to me, so I went with the GL4.
The GL5 is fine for the front Diff.

Just to add to the confusion......before I settled on Morriis XEP90 LSD oil I rang the service departments of 3 differnt Mitsubishi dealers and asked what they recommended. Here's what they said.
Dealer 1. Hypoid90 all round mate...no problem.
Dealer 2. Must be Hypoid 70/90 for front and rear diffs and transfer box.
Dealer 3 Hypoid 75/90 for the front diff and transfer gearbox and ANY type or brand of LSD oil in the rear.
So even if Mitsubishi's own technicians can't agree..what hope for us poor owners ? Sad

I took a container to the local Mitsi robber last month. Cost me £39.00 on the receipt for 3.5 ltrs. However, the mechanic that filled the new petrol can purchased for the job right up! So I got 5 ltrs. As previous posts suggest, why settle for second best. What's £10 or £20 more anyway to a Paj owner..

I have a good contact for new LSD palnet gears when you need them, yes any oil will do, but when it has to work as a limited slip diifferential, only LSD oil is correct.

and if you find the link someone put on here, Millers web site explains well.

I've waited 6 months for the definitive answer to this one. I've read the posts for months and I still won't change my diff oil.

Larchlap

Thanks for the oil, and nice to meet a fellow member even if only a flying visit.

Been traipsing round Halfords and the local motor factors today to get Castrol LS or any LSD oil, could I get any, no chance. It's ridiculous.
