|
|
Sump Guards / Bash Plates / Skid Guards
Call em what you like - we've all got them.
I just had to remove one of mine and I got a bit of a shock.
The 2 front guards are secured by 6 bolts.
2 of these are shared by the back of the front guard and the front of the back guard - with me so far ?
So effectively the back guard is held by 4 bolts of which 1 was missing and 2 (both the back ones) were stripped.
If this dropped whilst driving - the consequences could be very nasty.
CHECK YOUR SUMP GUARD BOLTS PEOPLE |

I had one shear on the rear one, so I had my son weld a bolt in its place also would advise some copperslip smeared on the bolts with some anti-vibration washers, as this will stop corrosion and loosening |

Well the two back bolts sheared of which leaves me having to drill and re-tap the captive nuts. Mind you my sump gaurd looks good all painted up. |

OK - first I removed my rearmost one a long while ago partly cos I was taking the front one down so often and got sick of juggling the two. There is a seventh bolt to nowhere. Second, I thought I had stripped bolts where the front meets rear but replaced with slightly longer bolts and all's happy - the bolt length was too short see. With the side steps off and the plate off, guess what, I can work under the motor and get to all of it. |

Trying to get this made sticky.
If one fell off at high speed and lifted the front of the car it could be a huge problem |
